Position Summary

Manages the Human Resources and related administrative activities of a large and complex veterinary medical center including participation in the development of business and administrative goals, objectives, policies and procedures. As an essential member of the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) Management Team, serves as internal consultant and strategic partner to management and staff in the areas of human resources, employee and labor relations, talent management and recruitment, culture and wellness, and diversity, equity and inclusion. Serves as a liaison to central MSU Human Resources to manage and coordinate human resource activities and to interpret and implement human resources policies, procedures and practices

Human Resources

  • Provides counsel in the area of human resources to management and support staff.
  • Coaches, mentors, advises, and ensures adherence to VMC, College and University policies and practices to minimize risk and liability.
  • Serves as HR Management leader in support of support staff and academic hiring processes, on-boarding, evaluation/performance reviews, disciplinary actions, professional development, and offboarding.
  • Collaborates with VMC Director to negotiate salaries and hiring packages including bonus structures for all employees.
  • Oversees performance management processes, reclassifications, promotions and merit request processes.
  • Provides guidance and counsel to VMC leadership on administrative impact of staffing decisions.
  • Responds to employee grievance and arbitration process as lead representative for VMC.
  • Communicates and collaborates with key college and university staff on HR policies and procedures that impact VMC.
  • Approves and, on an as needed basis submits, time and attendance for support staff and student employees EBS and Tracytime
  • Administers and monitors VMC personnel transactions and administrative function as it relates to budget (i.e. pay rate changes, cost redistributions etc., change of status).
  • Advises leadership on organizational/university policies such as sexual harassment, EEOC, FLSA etc. and recommends changes.
  • Maintain currency in the field of HR through continuous professional development.

    Talent Management and Recruitment

  • Provides strategic advice for exploring alternative sourcing methods to manage staff vacancies including attracting and screening talent for current and future positions within VMC.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with college and campus partners, local organizations and peer institutions to develop effective staffing/recruiting options.
  • Assists hiring supervisors/managers in the process of selecting, hiring and on-boarding staff with VMC. Coordinates planning of new employee/on-boarding activities.

  • Maintain and update the VMC personnel database.
  • Coordinate and/or lead the VMC Employee Engagement Team

    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field, or a field related to the employing unit; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in managing human resource functions, designing and implementing training programs and human resource/labor relations management and computer applications; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May require experience related to the field of employment.

    Excellent communication, critical thinking and leadership skills. Demonstrated support of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Ability to receive, collect, and process complex and diverse information in order to analyze options and resolve VMC issues independently while supporting the unit's overall strategic business objectives; ability to function as a business consultant/leader within and across multiple clinic sections; experience in Project Management or veterinary business management with customer service elements; knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations and best practices in the field of human resources; knowledge of various University internal support organizations and systems such as SAP, Kuali and Business Intelligence; demonstrated experience and ability to manage data from multiple systems and report information to laboratory leadership using advanced experience in Excel, MS Word, and MS Access or other data management tools.
