Position Summary:

Assist the Executive Director (ED) in performing duties related to and in support of the production faculty and the curricular needs of the MFA Film Television and Digital Media (MFA FTVDM) program and its production policies. Supervise and interface with graduate faculty and graduate students who participate in all facets of the production program, including Screenwriting, Directing, and Producing. The incumbent will interface with students across these disciplines during their two years of graduate study. Graduate students in the UGA MFA MFA FTVDM program work all year round. Directly supervise all issues related to physical production and post production and the successful interrelationship with faculty, staff, and students for the MFA FTVDM program, primarily based at UGA in Athens; Trilith Studios in Fayetteville; and future satellite campuses in the Athens or Atlanta area.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Knowledge of both Mac and PC operating platforms in a media environment, TV, and film studio operations, including a basic understanding of editing software, postproduction sound and color timing software. Knowledge of computer software/hardware. Working knowledge of production and postproduction equipment. Clear understanding of principles of supervision and office management utilized in the entertainment industry. Exercise independent judgment in office administration, analyze data and compile reports for executive decisions. Ability to interact well with all levels of the campus community, including full and part-time faculty, staff and students. Ability to accommodate technical process problems as they relate to the equipment and facility so that the staff can effectively respond to the needs of the school. Devise or adopt office procedures to changing organizational needs. Make clear, comprehensive reports and keep accurate records. Maintain confidences and confidential information. Compose correspondence under existing authority independently. Ability to accommodate technical process problems as they relate to the equipment and facility so that the technical staff can effectively respond to the needs of the school. Highly effective communication skills with all levels of management and personnel. Computer literacy, high level of proficiency with computers, networking and a comprehensive knowledge of production processes in film and television.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and organize documentation related to all UGA MFA FTVDM graduate students’ short films and thesis projects, and submit annual written assessments to the ED.
  • Where possible, and in consultation with production faculty, assist and advise students in analyzing their scripts to ready them for physical production and to make scripts follow all insurance and compliance issues. The PM is needed to review all short scripts, shooting schedules, preparatory work (story boards, shot lists, budget, and any other preproduction plans) on all UGA MFA FTVDM graduate student film and/or digital media projects (including both short and longer form films, TV pilots, and web series).
  • Supervise and identify the daily activities of all UGA MFA FTVDM student film productions at all relevant locations, inclusive but not exclusive to UGA in Athens and at and adjacent to Trilith Studios in Fayetteville. Direct supervision of all personnel engaged in the operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities within the school and its satellite campuses.
  • Conduct insurance workshops for all students at the beginning of each academic year.
  • Sign off on scripts in terms of insurance and other compliance issues before they can go into production (in consultation with production faculty). The ED has final approval in collaboration with relevant production faculty.
  • Coordinate all safety and insurance related issues among faculty, staff, and students. Coordinate and implement with staff and full & part-time faculty the policies and procedures required for safe and productive use of equipment by students in their curricular activities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance on areas related to budgeting and scheduling requests of faculty and students, in the production area.
  • In concert with ED’s Strategic Plan, forecast, plan, research, compile preliminary equipment and facilities budgets. Construct a 5-year equipment plan and analysis to assist the ED in annual budget preparation. Confer with ED on all financial matters.
  • Coordinate requests with Grady IT.
  • Identify and recommend equipment purchases based on feedback from production faculty and, assess space needs, and help to oversee the design of new production and/or post production space(s) as needed. Supervise the maintenance of all motion picture and electronic equipment (video/computers) in the school and the screening room(s).
  • Coordinate the compatibility and interconnection of all electronic equipment among the various labs and studios at all relevant UGA MFA FTVDM locations.
  • Act as liaison with outside vendors and promote ongoing professional relationships with outside vendors and support the fundraising efforts of the school related to physical production needs whenever possible in consultation with the ED.
  • In conjunction with production faculty, create a comprehensive preproduction, production, and postproduction handbook in conjunction with relevant faculty to be updated annually to conform to standards and practices of the entertainment industry, USG and UGA policy. Review, maintain, and revise the production handbook as necessitated in collaboration with relevant faculty and the ED.

  • Perform duties as assigned by the ED, including working with full-time production and other relevant pre-and-post-production faculty in assigning grad student interns to help manage the equipment room (aka the “cage”).
  • Assist with annual inventory.
  • Responsible for reporting injuries to the ED, lead production faculty, and insurance companies as required by UGA policies and relevant laws.
