Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Physics/Astronomy at San Diego Miramar College beginning Spring 2023. This assignment is 40 Hours per week from Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturdays. Days and times of this assignment are as assigned.
Located in the Mira Mesa/Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, Miramar College is one of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District. Hours and days are as assigned, Monday to Friday at 40 hours per week. The assignment may also include day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus responsibilities.

The Assistant Professor of Physics/Astronomy reports to the Miramar College Dean of the School of Mathematics, Biological, Exercise, and Physical Sciences.
The Assistant Professor is expected to perform the following duties:
- Teach introductory, non-major and major lecture and lab courses in Physics, Physical Sciences and/or Astronomy.
- Participate in Physical Science department meetings and committees.
- Assist with curriculum revision and course/program assessments.
- Maintain office hours for student advisement.
- Participate in various college and/or district committees which promote participatory governance.
- Fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with district guidelines and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Master’s in physics, astronomy or astrophysics
Bachelor’s in physics or astronomy AND Master’s in engineering, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics
The successful candidate will have:
- Relevant and recent experience in teaching lower-division college-level physics and astronomy lecture and laboratory courses.
- Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of improving physics and astronomy education by using active learning strategies in both the physics and astronomy classroom, the laboratory, and online.
- Demonstrated experience and/or interest in incorporating student career-relevant topics in the physics classroom and laboratory curriculum.
- Demonstrated experience and/or interest in engaging local communities and potential students through STEM outreach.
- Experience in and/or interest in engaging STEM students in extracurricular projects and mentoring activities outside of the classroom.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, administrators, instructional laboratory technicians and other staff.
- Demonstrated ongoing participation in professional development activities or professional projects in the field of physical sciences.
- Experience in creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for students that are underserved, historically excluded or underrepresented, and/or from different backgrounds.
- Demonstrated the skill and the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
Class 1, Step A – Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 – $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
