Nature of Work

Provision of urgent medical care to children

Supervision Exercised

Supervision of Pediatricians, Advanced Practice Providers, Residents, Medical Students

Examples of Work Performed

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Clinical – 0.6 FTE

• Maintain 0.6 cFTE (clinical full-time equivalent). Clinical Practitioners operating at 0.6 cFTE will be expected to provide coverage for 912 hours annually. This coverage will consist of Children's Hospital Colorado Urgent Cares only. Shifts will generally end before midnight; therefore, coverage will include:
    Days, evening, weekends, and holidays Jeopardy shifts (an internal physician coverage system for unanticipated absences)
Maintain active medical staff privileges at all other facilities where ED and Urgent Care services are provided by the Children's Hospital Colorado and its Network of Care. Attend at least 75% of the official CME and section meetings of the Network of Care / Section of Emergency Medicine.
Director of Urgent Care (0.40 FTE)
    Lead the clinical and academic operations of the CHCO Urgent Care program including free-standing Urgent Care sites, Virtual Urgent Care Program and Urgent Care provided in Dual Track at North and South campuses. Serve as an active member of the SOEM Clinical Leadership Council to assist in the coordination of urgent care and emergency services provided by SOEM faculty. In collaboration with the Pediatrician and APP group leaders, oversee the pediatrician and advanced practice provider (APP) urgent care workforce. The medical directors of the Urgent Care Program report directly to the DUC. In collaboration with SOEM Leadership Create and publish the quarterly Urgent Care program clinical shift schedule. Develop and oversee the academic mission of the Urgent Care Program, which includes, but is not limited to, education of faculty and learners, quality improvement, and maintenance of faculty core clinical competencies. May develop an Urgent Care Fellowship and contribute to the SOEM research efforts through supporting projects designed to develop new knowledge pertaining to the urgent care of children.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position has been established at $230,000 to $280,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • MD/DO
  • Completion of an accredited residency in Pediatrics or combined Emergency Medicine-Pediatrics
  • Board Certified or Board-eligible in Pediatrics
  • Active certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Active Colorado Medical License at time of hire
  • Active Colorado State DEA license at time of hire

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Advanced understanding of pediatric disease and injury patterns
  • Understanding of and familiarity with resources to assist in making clinical decisions and diagnosis
  • Use of electronic medical record (EPIC)
  • Teaching of medical learners
  • Effectively and respectfully field calls from referring physicians to facilitate referral to site appropriate for presenting problem/service requested and transport to site
  • Interpretation of plain radiographs
  • Foreign body removal
  • Laceration repair, including vermillion border and nail bed repair (some advanced techniques can be learned on job)
  • Incision and drainage
  • Reduction of minor digit fractures or joint dislocations (can be learned on job)
  • Nerve blocks
  • Lumbar puncture
  • IV fluid management of electrolyte and endocrine derangements
  • Acute respiratory care
  • Intubation (ongoing yearly skills training mandatory)
  • Pediatric resuscitation (must maintain PALS certification and complete required annual mock resuscitations)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years' experience in pediatric acute care environment (OR completion of a Pediatric Residency program with significant experience in Urgent Care electives and/or extra-clinical activities that demonstrate clear interest in pediatric urgent care)
  • Experience teaching medical students and residents
  • Experience with Point of Care Ultrasound in clinical environment

Condition of Employment:
  • Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex-offender background check
