The Section of Infectious Diseases at Boston Medical Center is recruiting talented MD or PhD investigators to join our faculty and launch their own research career. Candidates whose work focuses on infectious complications of substance use disorders or on tuberculosis and its comorbidities are particularly sought. Candidates may work with various methods approaches including microbial genomics, host immunology, population health/big data, modeling, cost effectiveness analysis and outcomes research. The position includes protected research time, resources to launch a new group, and the experience, resources, and mentoring of either the Syndemics Lab team or the TB Center research team. Other research interests within ID will be considered.

The Syndemics Lab focuses on producing the evidence base needed to develop new policies, interventions, and approaches to mitigating the harms of the syndemic (synergistic epidemics) of Hepatitis C, HIV, bacterial infections, and substance use disorder. The Boston Medical Center Infectious Diseases Section oversees the largest HIV/AIDS program in New England, as well as innovative programs treating HCV infection among homeless persons and people experiencing incarceration. Providers in the section see a broad spectrum of infections in patients with opioid-use disorders and with many comorbid and immunocompromising conditions. The Syndemics Lab provides research infrastructure and support including access to large databases for comparative effectiveness and healthcare services research, experienced data analysts, and a thriving group of faculty across all career stages who share a commitment to and passion for our work. In addition, the Infectious Diseases Section benefits from the resources and experience of the Providence-Boston Center for AIDS Research, as well as the NIDA-funded Center for Health Economics of Treatment Interventions for Substance Use Disorder, HCV, and HIV (CHERISH)

The TB Center focuses on understanding the pathophysiology and transmission dynamics of tuberculosis, with special interest in TB co-morbidities, including substance use, diabetes and malnutrition. The Boston Medical Center Infectious Diseases Section oversees the largest TB clinic in New England, as well as innovative programs screening for TB infection among persons experiencing homelessness, contacts of TB patients and people experiencing incarceration. Providers in the section have the opportunity to evaluate and follow patients with TB infection and disease, many with comorbid and immunocompromising conditions. The TB Center provides research infrastructure and support including access to an experienced TB modelling group, a vibrant Department of Global Health and a thriving network of faculty across all career stages who share a commitment to and passion for our work. The group also includes members in the BU National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) and opportunity to work with members of the Pulmonary Center. In addition, the Infectious Diseases Section benefits from the resources and experience of the Providence-Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR).

Required Skills

Candidates must be doctoral level (MD or PHD) and must be either planning to submit an NIH career development award, or already have a career development award with plan to submit an R01-level grant.
