Post-Doctoral Associate in the Division of Science (Biology) - Dr. Fabio Piano

Location:
Abu Dhabi, UAE
Open Date:
Sep 19, 2022
Description:

Our laboratory at New York University Abu Dhabi is expanding our expert team working on molecular networks and analysis of bioactive molecules in animal development using C. elegans. We use muti-disciplinary approaches to uncover mechanisms underlying fundamental biomolecular and biochemical processes during embryonic development.  A long standing interest in the laboratory has been the study of molecular and genetic networks during development and evolution (for some examples please see, Nature 436 (7052), 861-865; Science 330 (6012), 1775-1787; Science 330 (6012), 1775-1787; Cell 134 (3), 534-545) as well as identifying genetic and chemicals perturbations to study their function (for some examples please see, Cell 145(3):470-82; Nature 434(7032):462-9; Nature chemical biology 3 (1), 55-59; Development 143(19):3540-3548).

As a result of recent discoveries of new bioactive molecules from large high-throughput screens, we now seek to build a team to use the newly discovered compounds towards new fundamental discoveries of C. elegans development and towards pre-clinical work, especially for novel anthelminthics.  Three of the areas we seek to build are:

- Research Associate/Post-Doctoral Associate in Analytical metabolomics in C.elegans using NMR to work on biological and biophysical NMR spectroscopy in the areas of metabolomics and protein NMR.  The research will entail development and optimization of NMR methods, in both liquid and solid state, for in-vivo and in-situ metabolomics studies using C.elegans, along with protein dynamics and interaction determinations.  Candidates for this position, must have a PhD in Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biophysics or related disciplines, and a well-documented experience in biomolecular NMR.  Experimental skills in liquid and solid-state NMR spectroscopy are required along with sound computer work skills. Expertise in labeled protein expression and purification is also preferred as are other skills in biochemical analysis.  (Please use “NMR” when answering to this position).

- Research Associate/Post-Doctoral Associate in Metabolomics modeling using C.elegans and nematodes to build in silico models of molecular and biochemical networks that are based on transcriptomic, metabolomic and genomic data.  This position requires having worked with C. elegans or similar model and demonstrated capacity to analyze metabolomic data and ideally having already integrated these data with other -omic data like genetic and transcriptomic data. Candidates should hold a PhD in Bioinformatics, Compuational Biology, Biology or related fields and have a demonstrated capacity to work with model organism databases and to integrate -omic data.  (Please use “Metabolomic modeling” when answering to this position).

All applicants need to show excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, ability to work in a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment and have shown scientific creativity, curiosity and independence.  They will join a group that is highly motivated and has expertise that spans computational skills to cell biology and genetics using C. elegans.  It is vibrant and multicultural group that also includes members who work in shared lab space and also others who are in the New York laboratory.

The successful candidate will join a group headed by Prof. Fabio Piano for the laboratory in Abu Dhabi and all candidates must be able to obtain a work visa in the UAE.  The initial contract would be for two years with a usual probationary period and is subject to final budgetary approval.  The terms of employment are competitive and include housing and additional benefits.  Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered starting from October 01 until the position is filled.

Please submit a cover letter, research statement that includes a description of research accomplishments and research interest, curriculum vitae with full publication list, and four names of references and at least two letters all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please email nyuad.PianoLab@nyu.edu

Organization

NYU's agreement with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to create NYU Abu Dhabi is the outcome of a shared understanding of the essential roles and challenges of higher education in the 21st century: a common belief in the value of a liberal arts education, concurrence on the benefits a research university brings to the society that sustains it, a conviction that interaction with new ideas and people who are different is valuable and necessary, and a commitment to educating students who are true citizens of the world. As the first comprehensive liberal arts and science campus in the Middle East to be operated abroad by a major American research university, NYU Abu Dhabi has been built on the following principles:

  • NYU Abu Dhabi is a research university with a fully integrated liberal arts and science college. It draws students from around the world, and prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of our interconnected world.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi equips students for leadership in all arenas of human endeavor. It fosters curiosity, creativity, and critical reflection. At NYUAD, students extend themselves and the frontiers of knowledge.
  • The residential life of students is central to the University's academic mission. Learning takes place across the campus, not only in classrooms, but also in residential houses, through participation in clubs and sports, during informal campus gatherings, and being engaged with the wider community.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi stimulates advanced research. The NYUAD Institute is a major research center. Research is integral to the undergraduate experience at NYU Abu Dhabi, and it will also drive the University's graduate programs.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York form the backbone of a fully connected global network university. As one of the two major hubs in the global network, NYUAD creates a unique capacity for faculty and students to access the assets of the entire university system.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi advances the city of Abu Dhabi as a magnetic center of ideas and human talent.

Careers

NYU Abu Dhabi consists of a highly selective liberal arts and sciences college and a world center for advanced research and scholarship — integrated with each other and connected through technology to NYU New York.

Together, NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York form the backbone of a unique global network university that equips students for leadership in all arenas of human endeavor by fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical reflection.

NYU Abu Dhabi is a central component of Abu Dhabi's vision of becoming a leading world idea capital. For its first four years, the University is located in the heart of downtown Abu Dhabi. In 2014, it will move to its permanent home on Saadiyat Island, where it will be joined by neighbors including the Guggenheim, the Louvre, the Zayed National Museum, and a world-class performing arts center.

In working for NYU Abu Dhabi, you will help to build the world's first truly global university and research institute. The University's faculty and staff come from around the world, and the first class of students, who arrived in the fall of 2010, is one of the most geographically diverse student bodies on the planet. To date, NYU Abu Dhabi's staff alone is comprised of individuals from more than 30 different countries. For NYU Abu Dhabi, creating a culture of inclusion contributes not only to our success, but also to the richness of the talented staff that we can attract. When you join us as an employee, we look forward to learning more about your culture and seeing things from your unique viewpoint.
