ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

The Environmental Studies Department at Wofford College seeks a teacher-scholar with expertise in environmental humanities to join our multidisciplinary team of faculty as a tenure-track assistant professor starting fall 2023.

EXPECTATIONS
Wofford is a liberal arts college and environmental studies is an interdisciplinary department. Creative teacher-scholars who show expertise in more than one humanistic field, commitment to the liberal arts, and the ability to connect their teaching and mentoring to environmental aspects of natural and social science fields are preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion, broadly defined, and to equipping students to communicate effectively about environmental issues to diverse audiences. Candidates should discuss how they might work and facilitate learning at Wofford’s Goodall Environmental Studies Center, as some environmental studies courses take place there. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to take part in the Long-Term Environmental Reflection Project in the adjacent mill town and Glendale Shoals Preserve. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

The teaching responsibilities for this position include three courses each semester and a four-week January focused-study Interim term (except during the first year and sabbaticals). To earn tenure, faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, continued scholarly development and service to the college. The successful candidate will teach an environmental humanities core course taken by all environmental studies majors and minors. They will also teach upper- level courses within their specialty area and a topical first-year seminar. All department faculty periodically teach our four-credit interdisciplinary introductory seminar, capstone courses, and senior seminar, and mentor environmental studies majors as they engage in multi-semester original capstone projects that reflect their diverse interests.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified candidates will have completed a relevant terminal degree (e.g. Ph.D. or MFA) by Sept. 1, 2023. Experience with an environmental focus in at least one humanistic field, such as art, creative writing, cultural studies, English, film, journalism, literature, philosophy, religion or theatre, would be welcome. We are particularly interested in applicants whose pedagogy and scholarship show a commitment to diversity, equity and justice.

Candidates must show evidence of excellent undergraduate teaching, with the ability to incorporate multiple humanistic perspectives into environmental studies courses. They will mentor undergraduates in scholarship and creative endeavors, reflecting and developing the diverse interests of ENVS students. Candidates must show capacity and interest in experiential or applied teaching, broadly defined. The successful candidate must be active in scholarship or similar productive pursuits, with expertise that complements and broadens existing departmental strengths.

To apply, please send (as one pdf document): (1) a cover letter describing your experience and how you meet the qualifications of this position; (2) a current curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of teaching philosophy; (4) a statement of research interests and direction including your approach to mentoring student research; (5) a statement of how you approach diversity, equity and inclusion in your professional role; (6) the names and contact information for three professional references to ENVS-search@wofford.edu.
