Continuing Track Assistant Professor, Secondary Science Education,

The College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Delaware (UD) invite applications for an assistant professor, continuing track faculty position to lead the College’s secondary science education program, which includes degree programs in all three participating departments. The successful candidate will have a full-time, continuing faculty appointment in the department most closely aligned with the candidate’s expertise. The start date of the position is August 16, 2023.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Candidates must have a doctoral or equivalent degree in science education in any of the three subject areas (biology, chemistry, physics). Candidates with a minimum of three years of experience teaching science at the secondary level (grades 7-12) are strongly preferred. The successful candidate is expected to: 1) provide leadership for and coordination of the science teacher education program across departments, 2) teach science education methods courses and seminars, 3) supervise teacher candidates in field experiences and student teaching, 4) identify local schools or other organizations for teacher candidates’ field experiences, 5) build relationships with science teachers in secondary schools, with State Education regulatory bodies, and with the community to enrich the science education program, 6) develop an active recruitment strategy for secondary science teacher education in Delaware, and 7) provide professional learning opportunities for science educators.

We seek candidates with knowledge and experience implementing research-based instructional strategies for heterogeneous populations; establishing, developing and maintaining partnerships with middle and high schools; demonstrated program and/or institutional leadership, and an agenda for the recruitment of students to the program. The Department of Biological Sciences offers BA and BS degrees in Biological Sciences, a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology and Genetics and a BA in Biological Sciences Education. More than 900 undergraduate students major in Biological Sciences at UD. The department has outstanding facilities and support, including a vibrant collaborative research and teaching community, and consists of 34 faculty and a robust graduate program with around 90 graduate students in the MS/PhD programs. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides BS and BA degrees in Chemistry, a BA in Chemistry Education, and a BS in Biochemistry. Nearly 200 full-time PhD students and many MS candidates work across approximately thirty vibrant research groups to push the boundaries of science and education. The Department of Physics and Astronomy (DPA) offers programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with BS, MS and PhD degrees in Physics, as well as BA degrees in Physics, Physics Education, and Astronomy. The DPA is home to more than 30 full-time faculty, over 70 graduate students and over 100 undergraduate majors; additionally, the introductory physics courses at the DPA serve over 2500 undergraduate students every year. The Interdisciplinary Science Learning Laboratories supports instruction in all three departments by providing laboratory and instructional staff to aid in interdisciplinary course development and delivery using evidence-based teaching practices in our state-of-the-art facilities.
