Description of primary duties and responsibilities::

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Division of Facilities Management functions are to design, construct, maintain and operate the physical facilities of the University. The number one objective of the department is to provide and maintain facilities that will enhance and support the mission and academic goals of the University. Our approach is centered upon providing a superior level of customer service. The primary responsibility of the organizational unit is providing cleaning, sanitizing and floor care to campus housing for approximately 1600 students.

Description of Work Continued::

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The Primary purpose of this position is to aid the Building Environmental Services management team on all matters concerning the operational aspects of the Fayetteville State University Housekeeping department. This position also provides on-site leadership to one or more teams of Housekeepers (4-10 employees), which includes: coordinating daily routine and detail cleaning; monitoring workplace safety and ensuring proper personal protective equipment is utilized.

The position provides daily routine and detail cleaning of residence hall building interior areas including but not limited to offices, lounges, restrooms, private rooms, laundry rooms, entrances, and stairways. General duties include vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dusting, and trash removal.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements::

High school diploma or equivalency, education and/or experience in housekeeping work that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience.

Knowledge skills and abilities::

Knowledge-Technical:
Advises staff of specialized cleaning and maintenance techniques and processes
for use in unusual situations or problems. General knowledge of established cleaning procedures and techniques, and special applications required in assigned areas. Ability to follow a daily work schedule and
observe performance of a small work group and react to situations requiring minor adjustments to routine.

Customer Service:
Recognizes potential problems in service and addresses and resolves promptly and
respectfully. Ability to insist on providing high quality service for internal and external customers. Demonstrates customer focus by seeking out, understanding, and responding to the needs of both internal and external customers. Responds to customer’s needs, questions and concerns in an accurate, effective, and timely manner.

Communication:
Conveys information clearly, confidently, and with proper tone. Facilitates open
communication. Uses discretion and demonstrates sensitivity to confidentiality concerns. Listens effectively and provides appropriate feedback. Should check and respond to emails daily. Ability to develop and deliver written information to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the message

Dependability/Attendance:
Ability to demonstrate dependability, which requires daily attendance. Ability to
report to work daily, for a full shift, at an appropriate time. Ability to submit leave request at least 5 days in advanced as much as possible.

Planning/Organizing:
Ability to plan the daily work schedule of the staff by prioritizing the needs of the
organization and implementing procedures to ensure that the tasks are completed effectively and efficiently.

Change Management:
Ability to plan and implement change initiatives. Ability to support innovation and creativity by encouraging staff to accept and resolve challenges. Ability to remain flexible to meet constantly changing and sometimes opposing demands.

Leading Work Teams:
Ability to establish expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of on-going work for a group of employees. Ability to motivate and engage employees through effective communication.

Preferred Qualifications::

Intermediate knowledge of institutional or commercial custodial procedures, methods,
techniques, and equipment used in a large-scale custodial operation and the ability to train staff to properly do their job function. Two-three years of related experience.

Fayetteville State University (FSU) is a member of the prestigious University of North Carolina System. Situated in southeastern North Carolina, FSU prides itself in being in one of the most diverse cities in the country and neighbor to one of the nation’s largest military installations – Fort Bragg.

FSU has a rich history that serves as genesis for its current status as a leading institution of higher learning. A year after the Civil War ended, the Phillips School provided primary education to Fayetteville’s black citizens, and the Sumner School provided intermediate education for this population. The two schools were consolidated in 1869 and dedicated in April of that year as the Howard School, in honor of the Freedman’s Bureau chief General O.O. Howard. Seven prominent African-American men pooled $136 to purchase two lots for the first building that housed the Howard School. Robert Harris was named the first principal of the Howard School.

In 1877, the Howard School became not just the first public normal school for African Americans in North Carolina but also the first state-sponsored institution for the education of African-American teachers in the South. It was renamed the State Colored Normal School in Fayetteville that year, Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, Fayetteville State College in 1963, and Fayetteville State University in 1969.

While FSU’s roots are as a teacher education institution, it now offers nearly 70 degrees at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. Many of the programs are accredited by the top agencies. The university’s School of Business and Economics is endorsed by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). AACSB is one of the most prestigious and rigorous accrediting bodies for business programs in higher education. Currently, less than one-third of U.S. business programs and only 15% of the world's business programs have earned AACSB accreditation. Receipt of this distinguished accreditation provides evidence that FSU’s School of Business and Economics has established itself as a leader among business schools. Additionally, the Master of Business Administration program has been cited by U.S. News and World Report and The Princeton Review as one of the best graduate business school programs in the country. The Department of Criminal Justice is accredited by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). FSU’s criminal justice program is the only such program in North Carolina to hold ACJS certification.

FSU is rapidly becoming a center for research and technology. In spring 2010, the university, in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, cut the ribbon on the Southeastern North Carolina Regional Microanalytical and Imaging Center. The center is home to the electron microprobe, an advanced imaging tool that magnifies objects up to 300,000 times.
