Position Purpose: The Director of Human Resources supports learning through general oversight and coordination of the university's comprehensive human resources functional areas including compensation and benefits administration, recruitment and employment, leave administration, workers compensation, training and development, employee relations, compliance, and human resources information systems (HRIS). The Director is responsible for assisting the Vice President for Human Resources with the development and implementation of new policies, services, and programs to meet the needs of the campus community.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists with the development and execution of human resources (HR) policies and programs in support of the university’s employees and business operations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of federal and state regulatory requirements. Assists with the university’s compliance efforts and reporting pertaining to personnel matters.
  • Oversees HRIS administration; maintains accurate reporting data and provides timely Informer reports to support the university’s statistical reporting needs.
  • Works closely with the HR staff to assure the integrity of files and documents.
  • Maintains active working knowledge of all university employee benefits (including retirement plans and tuition remission programs); assists with administering insurance benefit programs. Works closely with HR staff, broker, and benefit carriers for overall benefit administration. Assists with the review, enrollment of eligible employees and dependents, resolution of benefit issues, and assists with annual renewal.
  • Counsels employees and manages the university’s FMLA, disability, worker’s compensation, and leave administration program.
  • Establishes and maintains HR training programs to support compliance and support employee development.
  • Develops and leads employee communication programs to keep employees informed of their benefits and current HR issues.
  • Assists managers with employee relations issues involving employee concerns, dispute resolution, performance management, accommodations, and other workplace issues.
  • Ensures integration, consistency, and communication with other administrative departments (Business Office, Payroll, Academic Affairs, ITS, University Communications, etc.)
  • Provides oversight and assistance to HR staff with the university’s recruitment efforts.
  • Assists the VP for Human Resources on projects or other institutional objectives as needed.
  • Essential Job Requirements:

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Professional HR certification desired.

    Experience:

    • At least seven years of related experience with at least three years in an HR leadership role. Experience in higher education or not-for-profit settings is strongly preferred.

    Skills:

    • Strong HR generalist knowledge with an understanding of employment, benefits, leave administration, payroll, workers compensation, employee relations, and other HR functions.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks with attention to detail.
    • Ability to process and explain complex legal and technical concepts.
    • Excellent computer skills; knowledge of Colleague and Informer desired.
    • Strong leadership and communication skills.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to spend long periods of time at a computer workstation.
    • Ability to move about campus and other locations.
    • Minor lifting requirements, such as files or copy paper boxes as needed.
    • Ability to use general office equipment.
    • Ability to interact in person, via electronic media, and on the telephone.

About 700 student-athletes compete in sports.     A Brief History of Aurora University

    Founded in 1893 in Mendota, Illinois, as Mendota Seminary, the institution soon changed its name to Mendota College. By 1911, it had outgrown its facilities and the following year changed its name to Aurora College and moved to Aurora, where its students could take advantage of a thriving business environment and easy access to Chicago. In 1985, Aurora College changed its name to Aurora University to better reflect the magnitude of its academic offerings. Seven years later, Aurora University and George Williams College traditions blended when the two institutions entered into an affiliation agreement that paved the way for a merger eight years later. In 2010, the Woodstock Center opened to meet the needs of students in McHenry County and surrounding communities.
