Job Description

NAU Strategic Initiatives and Operations is seeking one (1) skilled and experienced Business Analyst or Business Analyst, Intermediate to join our team. This position develops and maintains an understanding of Student Affairs needs and their alignment with business goals and objectives. Elicits business needs from subject matter experts, translates needs into functional requirements, and documents requirements in specifications, business process flows, analysis tools, etc. Evaluates past and current department-level business processes and data to improve decision-making within the department. Collaborates with business partners and stakeholders to identify goals, best practices, and other methods for gathering and analyzing processes, business applications, and data. Contributes to aspects of complex projects. Collaborates as a member of an institutional center of excellence with enterprise business analysts and other divisional business analysts at the institution. Helps to identify the Student Affairs business intelligence, reporting, and data analysis needs. Assists Student Affairs in developing a picture of the divisions' current contributions and new efforts to improve student retention and academic success, wellness, and inclusion/sense of belonging.

Business Analyst

Business Analysis and Process Improvement - 65%
  • Gathers information from a variety of sources within the division; works with a project team of functional and technical staff to create project vision, business use cases, requirements, work plan, and business design specifications.
  • Elicits requirements and works with experienced business analysts to provide recommendations for improvement on prioritized, divisional projects independently; projects are generally routine and span/impact more than one business unit or department or require basic knowledge of business processes involving a number of stakeholders.
  • Responds to end-user questions, issues, and service opportunities.
  • Designs and implements test plans using basic test cases to assess the impact of business process changes on systems. Systems impacted generally will be simple; collaborate with experienced business analysts as necessary to ensure multi-unit and multi-system processes are assessed and tested appropriately.
  • In coordination with the Information Technology Services and other administrative business analysts, identifies and investigates Oracle/PeopleSoft and other system problems, issues, and circumstances and provides recommendations, alternatives, risks, and benefits of system modification to the change request management board.
  • Monitors or manages tickets, updates, fixes, and enhancements in advance of the business units. Creates documentation, reports, and planning documents on the use of new or enhanced Peoplesoft updates.
  • Identifies and works with experienced business analysts to recommend solutions for streamlining and improving Student Affairs department operations.

Data Analyst, Business Intelligence, and reporting - 20%
  • Collaborates with experienced business analysts to identify various reporting and metrics to measure efficiency and effectiveness. Creates custom reports to meet specific business needs.
  • Collaborates with unit members, stakeholders, and others to create new or modified reporting to support decisions.
  • Gathers and collaborates with experienced business analysts to analyze University data to produce reports, communication that interprets information for unit leadership, and collaborates with stakeholders and experienced business analysts to provide recommendations for change through data analysis.
  • Compiles data, prepares reports, and collaborates on recommendations to allocate funds as needed, ensuring university business needs are met.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of appropriate handling of university business intelligence data.
  • Develops and uses basic analytical tools and models. May work with other technical and functional experts when necessary to gather information and collaborate on tools and model design.
  • Ensure analysis is conducted and reporting is presented with attention to equity, inclusion, and understandability.
  • Works with basic, disparate, student data to derive meaningful visualizations and recommendations.

Training - 5%
  • Defines training requirements to deliver training support to end users within Student Affairs, and evaluates feedback from users.

Project Management - 5%
  • Supports a variety of unit initiatives through project management support, including project scoping, milestones and timelines.
  • Collaborates with experienced business analysts to lead project teams to ensure the project charter, purpose, and scope and maintained and outcomes achieved.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.

Business Analyst, Intermediate

Business Analysis and Process Improvement - 65%
  • Gathers information from a variety of sources within the division, vendors outside NAU, and from others impacted across the university; works with a project team of functional and technical staff to create project vision, business use cases, requirements, work plan, vendor requested documents, and business design specifications.
  • Elicits requirements and provides recommendations for improvement on prioritized, divisional projects independently; projects are generally complex and span/impact more than one business unit or department or require knowledge of sophisticated business processes involving a number of stakeholders.
  • Identifies and mitigates risk factors associated with business process and the need for security, continuity of operations plans, and other risk mitigations to ensure consistency, efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of the unit.
  • Identifies and responds to end-user questions, issues, and service opportunities.
  • Designs and implements test plans using advanced test cases to assess impact of business process changes on systems. Systems impacted generally will be complex and/or outside of the work unit in which the business process/system change is made; collaborates with solution architects as necessary to ensure multi-unit and multi-system processes are assessed and tested appropriately.
  • Leverages a data-driven approach to create specifications of new data business process designs for review and approval from department management, based on examination of current business data and information gained from systems analysts and other stakeholders.
  • In coordination with the Information Technology Services and other administrative business analysts, identifies and investigates Oracle/PeopleSoft and other system problems, issues, and circumstances and provides recommendations, alternatives, risks, and benefits of system modification to the change request management board.

Data Analyst, Business Intelligence, and Reporting - 20%

Training - 5%

  • Leads and collaborates project teams to ensure the project charter, purpose and scope and maintained and outcomes achieved.
  • Acts as a project manager, possesses knowledge of the business process/systems interface in the work units they support, and possesses analytical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Business Analyst
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Business Analysis, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Business Analyst, Intermediate
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Business Analysis, or a related field.
  • 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Business systems support experience in higher education.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, SalesForce, ServiceNOW, OnBase, and other cloud solutions.
  • The ability to read and write SQL.
  • Working knowledge of Student Affairs and Academic Structure.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with requirements management tools and software for documenting business process, requirements, and testing.
  • Experience taking a business process and automating it with the implementation of a software solution.
  • Experience with data warehouse, Business Objects, Tableau or other reporting systems.
  • Understanding of interactions between university business units.
  • Experience managing projects.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Business Analyst: Anticipated salary range is $47,634 to $59,542.*

Business Analyst, Intermediate: Salary is $62,996.*

*Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
