Primary Purpose of Department:

The School of Professional (SPS) reports to the division of Academic Affairs, and works collaboratively with departments, colleges, and academic support units to ensure integrated partnerships for enrollment growth, student success and faculty effectiveness in teaching.

Primary Purpose of Position:

Functioning in an instructional consultant capacity, the primary purpose is to assist faculty and other instructional staff on instructional matters such as course content, curriculum structure, and instructional technique as related to online and distance learning. Specifically, the position provides design, development, revision, management, and support of online courses and online programs working directly with faculty to provide pedagogical and instructional design consultation to support effective and innovative delivery of academic credit courses to online students. The position provides instructional design and development for online courses and assists in the selection and development of digital learning objects/multimedia for online, hybrid, and flipped courses.
Instructional in nature, these duties are associated with the regular academic and educational experiences provided by the university, are uniquely supportive of those academic and educational experiences, and involve significant and independent interaction with participants in the university’s instructional and educational program.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

This position has responsibility for and contributes significantly to the online/distance course design efforts and supporting the other instructional design programs and initiatives that relate to the growth of online learning at UNC Charlotte, requiring expertise in instructional systems design and best practices in teaching and learning. This will include planning, implementing, promoting, managing and evaluating the changes associated with learning environments and instructional systems. The position requires that a substantial proportion of the work commitment is devoted to instructional activities and the direction of educational/academic supportive activities.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization such as Instructional Systems Technology, Curriculum/Instructional Design, Teaching, or related field to teaching and learning.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional systems design (ISD) methods, online course development, instructional strategies and methodologies, instructional technologies, media selection/design, evaluation, needs analysis, and learning theory.
  • Must have knowledge regarding the appropriate hard and soft technologies and their applications used in redesign of courses for online environments.
  • Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback and to work in a team-oriented environment required.
  • Exceptional communications skills are required, in both writing and public speaking / presentation.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Doctorate degree preferred in a closely related field.
