Description:

Professors of the Practice in Communication; Alternative Journalistic Practice

The Department of Communication at Tulane University invites applications for two professors of the practice in journalism with an emphasis on either sports/entertainment reviews and analysis, or civic and community-engaged journalism.

The ideal candidates will encourage alternative forms of journalistic practice that allow students to develop digital portfolios of their work for print, magazines, blogs, or multimedia formats. Our new faculty will teach “Alternative Journalism,” which focuses on the histories and practices of journalism outside of a traditional newsroom in the traditions of social movement journalism, feminist and alternative press, community-based media, and muckraking. In addition, they will develop courses that strive to help students develop their ability to tell stories that exemplify excellent writing, interviewing, and investigative skills. We are especially interested in applicants whose creative/professional practice enables students to engage local communities in sharing their experiences and cultural traditions.

The Communication Department centers on critical and global approaches to the study of cultures and identities; film and media texts; and cultural industries and institutions. Our faculty value our interdisciplinarity connections and our dedication to an engaged classroom. See description of our curriculum here: https://liberalarts.tulane.edu/departments/communication/academics/the-communication-major

Professors of Practice are hired on a three-year contract, and are renewable upon academic review. The teaching load is 3 courses per semester. New Orleans has a vibrant community of alternative media producers reporting on the most compelling social issues of our times. Tulane University has opportunities for students to work with digital media, podcasting, film, as well as participate in partnerships with ESPN and local nonprofits.
