Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Department of English & World Languages welcomes applicants for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2023 with expertise in professional writing, preferably with specialty in discourses of social justice.

Faculty will have the opportunity to teach courses as part of the University’s General Education program, support our growing undergraduate on campus and online bachelor’s degrees in English: Writing Studies, and collaborate with the university’s new Lombardo College of Business to develop course offerings and programming for our shared students.

Responsibilities include teaching, advising students, scholarly work and department and university service. Teaching responsibilities will include business writing, technical writing, first-year writing and other courses in the Writing Studies program as well as the possibility of graduate-level courses. Actual course assignment will depend upon departmental need and may include day, evening, weekend, and/or online courses. Classes should be conducted through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to-face, web-enhanced, or web-based classroom delivery. Faculty are expected, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement Article 4, to engage in professional responsibilities such as developing and updating curriculum, assessing learning outcomes for courses and programs, and participating in department, college and university meetings and workshops.

The faculty member will have opportunities to teach in our graduate program in their area of expertise and to innovate courses in business and technical writing. There is also an expectation for faculty to mentor undergraduate students in scholarly research and to establish a robust and sustainable research agenda that leads to peer-reviewed scholarly outputs appropriate for the discipline. Faculty routinely advise and mentor students in other high-impact practices, as appropriate. We are committed to antiracist pedagogies and curricular interventions, and we seek a colleague who will contribute to facilitating constructive dialogues in the classroom and community to inspire responsible, socially engaged citizenship.

Required Qualifications:

  • ABD or PhD in writing (Rhetoric/Composition; Writing Studies; English with a specialization in professional or technical writing). Must have doctorate by January 31, 2023, for eligibility for reappointment to 2nd year. An official transcript must be submitted as proof of completion. If the doctorate is not completed by the specified date, the faculty contract will be terminated effective as of the end of the (second) year of employment.
  • Experience teaching courses in rhetoric and composition and professional writing (e.g. Technical Writing, Business Writing, Science Writing, Web Writing).
  • Evidence of research/ scholarship in or professional experience in business, technical, or professional writing.
  • Ability to teach classes through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to- face classroom delivery, distance learning, or blended learning.
  • Ability to develop professional writing, business writing, and general education curricula.
  • Evidence of interest in developing new courses related to Writing Studies.
  • Ability to develop cross-disciplinary collaborations with business, marketing, entrepreneurial studies.
  • Evidence of ability to teach diverse student populations.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
  • Successful interview, scholarly presentation, and teaching demonstration.
  • Successful completion of three successful background checks.

NOTE: Transcripts will be used to confirm degree and coursework requirements. Letters of reference will be reviewed to confirm teaching and research capabilities and commitment to working with students with diverse backgrounds and cultures. The other qualifications can be documented by any of the following items that can be uploaded as optional documents: teaching philosophy, peer review of teaching, list of publications, student evaluations or teaching awards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in writing (Rhetoric/Composition; Writing Studies; English with a specialization in writing).
  • Ability to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: grant writing, proposal writing, writing for non-profits, workplace literacies/communication, digital workplace, entrepreneurship, business ethics, public rhetoric’s, professional writing and community engagement/advocacy and social justice.
  • Practical career experience in a business field.
  • Evidence of scholarly engagement in areas related to professional writing and community engagement/advocacy/social justice.
  • Evidence of teaching with high-impact practices.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:The Department of English & World Languages at Millersville University houses degree-granting programs in English, English Education, Languages, and a degree option in Writing Studies. We also offer a Master of Arts and Master of Education in English. We enroll over 200 students in our undergraduate programs and 40 students in our graduate programs. We have 20 tenured/tenure-track faculty representing a wide range of research interests and specializations. We are a department that is focusing significant energy towards growing our Writing Studies program, including a recently formed online degree option.

Essential Functions:

  • Major responsibilities include teaching major and/or non-major courses (lectures) in writing studies, rhetoric, and professional writing as well as courses within his/her/their area of specialization. The academic-year workload for full-time faculty is 24 workload hours and faculty must hold a minimum of five office hours per week on no fewer than three different days.
  • Additional duties include but are not limited to developing a research program in writing studies that involves undergraduates and/or graduates, supporting academic advisement and student mentorship, as well as participating in assessment and accreditation activities.
  • Actual assignments and additional duties will depend upon department needs.
