General Description:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, the Director of Human Resources develops and leads HR practices, objectives and initiatives that foster the College’s mission and core values, and the recruitment and retention of diverse and talented faculty and staff. This position provides leadership in the development and implementation of HR policies, procedures and programs with an emphasis in the areas of talent acquisition, performance management, and employee relations. The Director of Human Resources demonstrates a broad range of HR expertise to support cross-functional collaboration and maximize HR service delivery, and supports the AVP in efforts to ensure that HR policies, processes and procedures comply with the College’s collective bargaining agreements, and applicable laws and regulations.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist the AVP in the development and implementation of HR goals, metrics, policies, procedures and programs.

  • Collaborate with unit leaders with the College to support programs and initiatives; assisting with workforce planning efforts and incorporating best practices within the field of HR.

  • Provide strategic HR leadership with an emphasis in the areas of talent acquisition, talent management, and employee relations.

  • Assist the AVP in the development and implementation of HR strategic goals, objectives and metrics.

  • Monitor human resources policies, procedures and programs to ensure alignment with College’s mission and strategic goals.

  • Oversee organizational-wide view of talent acquisition; leading higher-level searches as needed.

  • Oversee the College’s background screening process for new hires and current employees.

  • Coach and advise managers on organizational and employee issues; investigating complex employee relations matters and recommending and facilitating effective solutions in alignment with applicable collective bargaining agreements, policies and laws.

  • Work in consultation with the General Counsel’s Office, as needed, to resolve highly complex employee relations issues.

  • Advise departments regarding HR policies/procedures and proper interpretation of the CBA and related processes.

  • Oversee the department’s new hire orientation and onboarding program.

  • Manage relationships with background screening, temporary staffing and recruitment vendors, including current agreements and contracts.

  • Provide advice and direction to supervisors with regard to performance management, grievances, disciplinary actions, etc.

  • Manage faculty human resources processes, such as annual contract renewals, sabbaticals, salary calculations, promotions, etc.

  • Conduct internal investigations and assist managers in the resolution of employee relations issues.

  • Assist managers in the development of job descriptions and conduct job evaluations to ensure the proper classification of staff positions.

  • Maintain an up-to-date electronic bank of job descriptions for faculty, administrative, and classified/confidential positions.

  • Manage processes and systems related to talent management, including probationary reviews and annual administrative and classified/confidential performance evaluations.

  • Develop and implement an annual talent acquisition strategy and plan to ensure well-qualified and diverse applicant pools.

  • Manage the HR recruitment budget and oversee staff’s performance.

  • Assist the AVP in updates to the employee handbook.

  • Perform research on best practices and current trends within assigned functional areas; making recommendations and enhancements to assigned areas based on best practices.

  • Maintain processes to track adjunct new hire transcripts and follows up on missing transcripts as needed.

  • Maintain faculty promotion and tenure schedule, and coordinate the distribution of promotion letters.

  • Coordinate the Reasonable Assurance notification process for all current adjunct faculty.

  • Assist the AVP with tracking and monitoring expenses related to unemployment compensation claims and represent the College at unemployment hearings.

  • Provide leadership, training, direction and guidance to assigned staff.

  • Facilitate the preparation, dissemination, and return of all faculty re-appointment and non-renewal notifications.

  • Manage the faculty sabbatical process in accordance with the College’s collective bargaining agreement.

  • Gather and compile data to drive results and make data-driven decisions and recommendations.

  • Stay abreast of trends, laws and regulations and technologies related to assigned areas.

  • Serve on cross-functional teams, as directed.

  • Assist the Associate Vice President, Human Resources with special projects.

  • Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional, helpful and courteous manner.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Any and all degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

  • A minimum of six (6) years of relevant HR experience required.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience as a consultant and advisor to management in employee relations, employment and labor law, staffing and employment, performance and management coaching, and organizational development.

  • A minimum of three (3) years of management experience required.

  • Demonstrated success in advancing services and policies that support, value and enhance diversity.

  • Excellent client relationship management skills and ability to resolve issues with diplomacy and tact while building positive relationships at multiple levels and with diverse groups.

  • Experience using an applicant tracking system, such as PeopleAdmin, required.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple and changing priorities required.

  • Knowledgeable of best practices within the human resources field required.

  • Knowledgeable of applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations required.

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, judgment, and problem solving skills required.

  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency using an enterprise-wide system, such as Ellucian Banner, required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency using MS Word and Excel required.

  • Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, organizational development, business or related field preferred.

  • Previous HR experience in a unionized environment preferred.

  • Previous HR experience in higher education preferred.
