Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Director of Ehrhorn Law Library is responsible for all aspects of the library operations, including budgeting, hiring and supervision of library staff, strategic planning with respect to the future growth and development of the law library, and initiating and monitoring library programs and services. The Director ensures that the Law Library’s collection and resources are sufficient to meet the primary goal of supporting the teaching and research needs of the School of Law’s faculty, staff and students, and ensures that the Law Library is in compliance with accreditation standards of the American Bar Association.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities· Establishes a shared vision that promotes the mission of the law school and University.· Implements a clear and concise strategic plan to advance that vision.· Promotes and advocates for library programs that address the needs of students, staff, faculty,
and the University· Manages the law library’s budget.· Collaborates with the Associate Dean of Administration and Student Development in the
following areas of personnel management in the law library.1. Classification of staff positions and periodic revision of job descriptions.2. Recruitment and interviewing of candidates for positions.3. Hiring, training, evaluating, and promoting employees.4. Scheduling, organizing and supervising work operations.5. Promotion of employee work satisfaction and general staff welfare.· Effectively addresses needs of patrons.· Available to teach Legal Research as a part of the Lawyering Skills program.· Coordinates with the Director of Operations to ensure facilities are properly maintained.· Keeps current in library trends, including participating in professional and other meetings as
appropriate, membership in state and national library organizations and networking with
regional libraries.· Continually evaluates the effectiveness of library services in relation to changing needs of the community and develops plans to meet those needs.
· Evaluates future needs for library services and resources to meet those needs.· Supervises selection, acquisition, and processing of library materials to meet public needs
within the structure of library selection policies and budgetary limitations.· Creates an environment which supports professional advancement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • J.D. and M.L.S. preferred; candidates who do not possess both degrees must demonstrate they have the requisite and appropriate academic qualifications and knowledge in law library administration sufficient to support a program of legal education that is in compliance with ABA Standards (603 © )
  • 5 years of experience in the administration of an academic law library
  • Proven record of effectively managing and supervising academic law librarians and library staff
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Prior experience as the director or associate director of an academic law library preferred
