The Department of History at Georgetown University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The appointment is to begin on August 1, 2023.

The Department seeks an historian of the early modern to modern “Near East” (Mashriq), corresponding to the former Mediterranean provinces of the Ottoman Empire: Egypt, Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. Candidates must specialize in the social and cultural history of the MENA and be proficient in Arabic and Arabic sources. They must demonstrate a record of excellence in scholarship and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as a strong commitment to interdisciplinary methods. Scholars specializing in gender and sexuality, women's studies, Islamic legal history, and post-colonial MENA states and societies will be strong candidates for the position.

Position Details

The position carries a teaching load of four graduate and undergraduate courses in a normal academic year. Responsibilities will also include teaching a graduate methods seminar, advising theses for both master's students and undergraduate honors majors, and overseeing independent research studies. Finally, the successful candidate will pursue opportunities for community outreach and intermural collaboration with associated MENA departments at Georgetown University, such as the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must be in possession of their Ph.D. in History no later than July 1, 2023.
