Position overview
Anticipated start: July 1, 2023 Application Window

Position description

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, has been authorized to make an appointment in Phonetics. This is an open-rank search; the position will be filled at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-track) or associate or full professor (tenured), depending on experience and qualifications. Duties will include teaching (up to four courses per year); undergraduate and graduate advising and supervision of student research; contributions to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within linguistics and at UC Berkeley; development of a successful and original research program; and directing the Linguistics Department's PhonLab.

Applicants must have a broad intellectual engagement in linguistics and a research specialization in phonetics, understood broadly. The department welcomes additional research interests or skills that will contribute to the intellectual life of a broad linguistics community (including cognitive science, computational or statistical modeling, language documentation, language family expertise, linguistic typology, neuroscience, phonology, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics). Applicants must be able to teach general linguistics courses as well as phonetics courses at all levels, including seminars, and provide research mentoring.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at UC Berkeley and in its Department of Linguistics. Integral to the work of many linguistics students and faculty at UC Berkeley is a program of engagement with minoritized or Indigenous language communities in California, the US, or elsewhere in the world, and a commitment to the view that research excellence is compatible with collaborations that serve those communities' goals or with broadening the diversity of students in linguistics. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. We welcome applications from those who have had non-traditional career paths, have achieved excellence in careers outside academia, or have taken time off for family reasons. The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or the career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit http://ofew.berkeley.edu/new-faculty.

Applicants will be evaluated based on all of the following criteria: (1) accomplishments or potential for contributions to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; (2) research accomplishments or potential; (3) teaching and mentoring accomplishments or potential; (4) leadership accomplishments or potential; and (5) demonstrated ability to make connections outside their area of specialization across an intellectually diverse community of faculty and students. Applicants should ensure that all five criteria are addressed in their application materials.
