The Department of Child and Adolescent Development (ChAD) in the Lurie College of Education at San José State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The area of specialization is open, though preference will be given to candidates whose research examines children's educational, school, and learning experiences and/or the impact of curriculum and teaching practices on children's social, emotional and/or cognitive development (ECE to early elementary school).
We are a team of dedicated teacher-scholars recognized for our commitment to excellent teaching, conducting high-quality research, and promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in child and adolescent development. The position involves teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, developing and maintaining an active research program, and engaging in academic and professional service. ChAD’s program pathways include courses on cognitive, social, emotional, and language development; contextualized understanding of child development; and children and families in community settings. Courses in our program include opportunities for students to be engaged members of the community through service learning and embedded practicum experiences. Our students become strong advocates for their communities and transition into several career pathways such as early childhood education, K-12 education, non-profit advocacy, research and policy. Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, a commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarly activity, and an ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The Department of Child and Adolescent Development is one of seven departments in the Connie L. Lurie College of Education, whose faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community partners are dedicated to creating meaningful, equitable, and inclusive learning experiences for our diverse community. - Doctorate in Child and Adolescent Development or a related field by time of the appointment;
- Experience in research and/or practice in any aspect of child development, such as cognitive, social, emotional, or language development; contextualized understanding of child development; or children and families in community settings (e.g., schools, non-profit organizations);
- Demonstrated track record or potential for developing and maintaining a scholarly research program;
- Commitment to excellence in teaching across a range of courses within the department;
- Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.
- Program of research examines children's educational, school, and learning experiences and/or the impact of curriculum, teaching practices, or education-related policies on children's development (ECE to early elementary school). The ideal candidate will have familiarity with teaching credentialing requirements, and/or teaching experience in early elementary school settings.
- Experience and/or interest in teaching courses with embedded practicum and/or supervised teaching components, and engaging with staff from practicum/supervision sites
- An interest in practical applications of research across various educational contexts
- Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines
- Teach a variety of undergraduate courses, and some Master’s level graduate courses;
- Actively engage in a program of research that contributes to the discipline; Contribute to curriculum development and innovation;
- Mentor and support undergraduate and Master’s level graduate students;
- The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments; and
- The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
