The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of History of Mathematics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in history of mathematics or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing and emerging departmental strengths. Areas of special interest to the Institute are (i) histories of race, gender, and identity; ii) non-Western histories of science and technology; and iii) histories of computing, information, artificial intelligence, and/or data science. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high international standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, well as strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the IHPST’s research-intensive graduate programs and its undergraduate major and minor programs. They will also be expected to teach the Institute’s core history of mathematics courses in addition to developing new courses related to their own research expertise.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The IHPST is dedicated to the humanistic understanding of science, technology, and medicine in their local and global contexts. It adds to that interdisciplinary mission an ongoing commitment to engage deeply with contemporary political and social issues, including in the areas of technology and ethics, science and race, and medicine and social justice.

Sample course material should include: a) syllabi of any relevant courses previously taught (as instructor or teaching assistant); and b) 2-3 brief descriptions (maximum 150 words) of proposed new courses the candidate would like to design.
