Job Description Summary

Wake Forest University (WFU)’s department of Information Systems (IS) is a
service-oriented team of talented technology professionals dedicated to serving the WFU community. IS provides modern, innovative core IT infrastructure, services, support and training with the empathy, passion and excellence at the core of the WFU motto pro humanitate. Within IS, our Client Experience and Digital Communications team is responsible for building and maintaining awareness in our community through digital, print and face-to-face engagement, both for acute changes and features as well as longer term
strategy and initiatives.

The IS Web Developer is our technical leader overseeing and caring for the front end IS web presence, which spans numerous sites and channels. This role is responsible for ensuring an accessible, elegant, intuitive, responsive, aesthetically pleasing, and brand-consistent online presence across the IS web ecosystem.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Build and maintain departmental digital and web presence, including web environments (WordPress) and other digital media, utilizing standard themes with some customization.

  • Maintain awareness of the most current ADA, 504 and W3C digital accessibility laws and guidelines.

  • Research integrations with other IS and university systems and services and implement these improvements to our web sites to enhance the user experience.

  • Work collaboratively with content specialists, designers, engineers, vendors and supervisors to ensure continuous improvement in digital communications, customer support and quality operations.

  • Maintain and enhance the digital user experience across all Information Systems digital media.

  • Manage inventory of digital equipment including but not limited to cameras, microphones, and lighting.

  • Occasionally work outside of normal business hours, as required.

  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least four years professional experience with exposure to frontend and backend web development platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead all phases required to create and maintain a modern, responsive, functional, accessible, customer-friendly web experience throughout a complex web environment. Ability to work closely with both creative and technical teams for both web development and routine maintenance. Ability to manage projects and work well with others in a team environment and under deadline pressure.

  • Experience building products using HTML/CSS/JS and other front-end technologies, ensuring compatibility across a myriad of endpoint environments.

  • Experience developing user interfaces and prototypes from wireframes and designs.

  • Familiarity with various web development and debugging tools.

  • Deep skill and experience using Wordpress or other equivalent CMS platform.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience.

  • Content management system (CMS) site development, design, and maintenance.

  • Understanding and appreciation of web accessibility concerns and strategies for improvement.

  • Experience managing a site within hosting platforms including a degree of comfort managing concerns related to DNS, Apache, SSL certificates, etc.

  • Knowledge and understanding of web development languages including HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript.

  • Experience using AWS or other cloud hosting environments.

  • Experience with Google Analytics and search engine optimization, and in using these to improve a website’s effectiveness and reach.

  • Strong knowledge of client-side environments and their impact on user experience.

  • Ability to multitask, perform work independently and adhere to tight deadlines.

  • Discretion with data: maintain security and confidentiality of any proprietary or sensitive data in any medium regarding the university or its students, faculty, or staff.

Additional Job Description

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience using graphic design and other creative applications, and an awareness of modern design principles.

  • Extensive experience using WordPress CMS and WordPress Multisite.

  • PHP and Javascript development.

  • Experience using containerization technologies.

  • Experience in web development within a higher education environment.

  • Git Version Control.

  • PHP dependency management with Composer.

  • Frontend tooling - Sass, Webpack, NPM, etc.

  • AWS - API Gateway, S3, Cloudfront.

  • cPanel hosting experience.

  • Familiarity with Linux and basic proficiency in command line navigation.
