Job Description:

 

 

Brown University invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost, to begin January 1, 2023. The position reports to the University President, Christina H. Paxson.

 

Responsibilities: The Provost serves as the chief academic officer and is responsible for strengthening academic excellence at Brown University. The Provost is an institutional leader who works closely with the President, senior deans, faculty, and administrative colleagues across the University to advance Brown’s distinctive interdisciplinary approach to research and education. In collaboration with schools, departments, senior colleagues and offices across Brown, the Provost plays a lead role in developing and stewarding operational plans for Building on Distinction, the University’s strategic plan; growing Brown’s research enterprise; advancing the Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan; and enhancing academic excellence and innovation. The Provost oversees efforts across the University to recruit, retain, and develop an exceptionally talented and diverse faculty and student body, and receives recommendations regarding faculty appointment, reappointment, tenure and promotion for all University faculty. In partnership with the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Provost leads the University’s budgeting and resource prioritization process to ensure the development of a sustainable budget model and plays a role in capital planning to support the preservation, renewal and expansion of facilities essential for teaching, research and campus life.

 

The Provost is second in seniority and serves as a trusted and essential partner to the President. The Provost chairs the Academic Priorities Committee, the University Resources Committee, and the Government Relations Working Group, and staffs the Corporation Committee on Academic Affairs. The Provost provides leadership and managerial oversight to the academic deans of the schools, college and faculty, and oversees a number of academic and administrative units that support the University’s mission of education and research.

 

Qualifications: The University seeks an individual with proven academic administrative leadership experience, exceptional judgment, a demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion, and the highest standards of integrity. Other required qualifications include broad intellectual interests; a track record of innovation; a clear and effective communication style; an appreciation of Brown’s commitments to shared governance and student-centered learning; and a collaborative approach to leading and managing people. Candidates must have a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching and be eligible for a tenured appointment in an existing department at Brown University.
