Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Studies, beginning Spring 2023 (January 30, 2023) at San Diego Mesa College. AAPI Studies is a new Ethnic Studies discipline at Mesa College and this is the first contract faculty position in this area.
While the current vacancy is at Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.
The Assistant Professor, AAPI Studies, will report to the Dean of Social/Behavioral Sciences and Multicultural Studies. Primary responsibility for this position will be the teaching of Introduction to Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies and additional AAPI courses such as Filipino Studies. In the first year of this assignment, there will be reassigned time for the course and program curriculum development and AAPI student success support. Additional responsibilities of Mesa College tenured/tenure-track faculty include maintaining regular office hours for student advisement, curriculum review and development, serving on College and District committees, and participating in various departmental, school, and college activities.

Master’s in Ethnic Studies and Bachelor’s Degree in Asian American StudiesOR
3. Equivalency (required if applicable)
The successful candidate should demonstrate evidence of:
- Subject matter competency in Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Studies or Ethnic Studies.
- Completion of appropriate graduate-level coursework in AAPI Studies or Ethnic Studies.
- Recent teaching experience in experience in AAPI Studies at the community college level and the ability to fairly and effectively evaluate student performance.
- Ability to teach effectively by demonstrating a working knowledge of varied learning styles, modalities, and teaching techniques.
- Experience with curriculum development, review, and/or implementation.
- Experience in instructional leadership activities such as program review, scheduling, assessment, and evaluations.
- Experience establishing partnerships and community relationships.
- Knowledge and understanding of critical issues facing AAPI and of the Asian diaspora.
- Effective oral communication and writing ability.
- Participation in ongoing professional activities in AAPI Studies, Asian Pacific Islander Studies, or Asian American Studies
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships across the college and District community.
Class 1, Step A – Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 – $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
