Purpose of Position:

The Department of Communication at Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Interpersonal Communication, effective August 2023. This position is a full-time, renewable non-tenure-track appointment with a 4-4 teaching load. We seek a teacher-scholar committed to undergraduate education and teaching excellence who augments our curriculum, which includes interpersonal communication, critical media studies, and rhetoric.

The successful candidate will contribute to our department’s social scientific approach to interpersonal communication by offering courses that align with their theoretical and methodological expertise such as: Interpersonal Communication; Intercultural Communication; Nonverbal Communication; Communication and Film; Family Communication; Interpersonal Conflict; Relationships and Technology; Advanced Relational Communication; Contemporary Topics in Health Communication; Qualitative Research Methods; Quantitative Research Methods; Interpersonal Theory; and Senior Research in Interpersonal Communication. We are especially interested in candidates with experience teaching intercultural communication and/or qualitative research methods.

The doctorate in Communication is required for appointment at the rank of Lecturer. Individuals who are ABD and will not hold the doctorate by the time of appointment and/or possess a master’s degree in a related field may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.

Departmental Information:

The Department of Communication at Christopher Newport University is composed of 13 full-time faculty. The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts program with over 200 majors, as well as a minor in Communication. A position in this collaborative department has a great deal to offer a teacher-scholar committed to a life of the mind and excellence in teaching. Our chapter of LPH is vibrant—regularly hosting philanthropic events and scholarly forums. Research and teaching for the department are interdisciplinary, emphasizing the production and reproduction of systems of meaning, knowledge, culture, and behavior. We are looking for colleagues who can appreciate the value of other theoretical and metatheoretical perspectives, see connections among these different perspectives in heuristic ways, and apply that area of expertise to teach a broad range of courses in the department.
