Associate Professor – Applied Mathematics

Job Description Summary

The Department of Applied Mathematics at Florida Polytechnic University seeks candidates for an Associate Professor with strong teaching skills, a demonstrated successful research program, and a willingness to perform service activities that enhance the educational mission of the university and support the broader mathematical community.

The Department of Applied Mathematics at Florida Polytechnic University has made substantial changes to its applied mathematics program to include a 4-course interdisciplinary sequence in a related field or department. The new undergraduate program provides the nexus of Florida Polytechnic University-wide activities in applied mathematics and related disciplines and close collaborations between applied mathematics faculty and faculty members in other engineering and science departments.

Applicants must provide evidence of highly successful college-level teaching, a plan for new or continued scholarship, and a commitment to do the service expected of a university faculty member. Faculty at the associate level are expected to assume leadership roles in external funding efforts, curriculum development, department initiatives, support of the applied mathematics major, and to assist in the broader educational mission of the department.

Job Description

ANTICIPATED START DATE: August 2023, though a January 2023 start may be possible.

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics
  • Hold the rank of associate or full professor at current institution OR be eligible to apply for associate during the 2023 – 24 academic year
  • At least six years post Ph.D. experience in higher education
  • Evidence of successful university-level teaching

  • A record of high-quality scholarship
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Service record commensurate with time in the profession
  • Evidence of academic leadership
  • Participation in obtaining funding or work on funded projects
  • Experience with undergraduate research projects
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity in STEM education.

We seek candidates who will immerse themselves into growing our new program in applied mathematics. This will involve the development and instruction of upper-division courses, recruitment of students, mentoring and advising for the major, working on capstone projects, development of interdisciplinary course sequences that complement the major, and a focus on career and graduate school opportunities for our students. In addition, top candidates will have a strong interest in forming partnerships with other departments, as well as with local industry, to develop interdisciplinary projects and research opportunities for both faculty and students. As a STEM-only university, Florida Poly necessarily must focus considerable attention on the first- and second-year mathematics courses. We seek candidates with strong teaching skills, and willing to push against educational norms to develop exciting and innovative curricula for these courses that enhance the overall educational experience of our students.

Florida Polytechnic University opened for classes in 2014-15 and is the twelfth university in the Florida State University System. The University was created as an exclusively STEM-focused public university that offers high-value undergraduate and graduate degrees, and that has intentional industry connections with a focus on economic development of the high-tech I-4 corridor. Dedicated to preparing students for the competitive STEM workforce, Florida Polytechnic University blends traditional subject matter mastery with problem-solving and laboratory experiences to provide students with learning opportunities applicable to both the workplace and a career of lifelong learning. The University delivers its courses in small class sizes, emphasizes a positive student-to-faculty experience, and is dedicated to both its teaching and research mission.

Florida Poly does not have a traditional tenure system. Faculty are employed via renewable, term defined appointments, codified in a collective bargaining agreement, that substantially mirrors tenure systems with reappointment and progression in rank upon completion of a significant review of accomplishments.

Lakeland, home to Florida Polytechnic University’s ultra-modern campus, is located along the I-4 High Tech Corridor halfway between Tampa and Orlando. Our central Florida community combines small town comfort with big-city culture. Florida’s High-Tech Corridor is home to 11,000 high-tech businesses, and Polk County alone has more than 600,000 residents, four universities and one state college. Lakeland is just a 45-minute drive from Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, professional sports teams, and thriving performing art centers. With no income tax in Florida, and home values increasing by approximately 10% over the past year, Lakeland and Central Florida continue to rise among the best places to live and work.
