Job Description The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law is seeking to hire for an entry level or lateral tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Business Law and related fields, and which will begin in Fall 2023. A J.D. or equivalent degree is required. The School of Law is looking for faculty members with a strong commitment to educating lawyers for the twenty-first century, and those who will actively participate in our collegial, collaborative community. We especially welcome applications from candidates who would add diversity to our faculty.

UMKC offers a wide range of Business Law courses and programs. As part of the J.D. program, students may earn a Business and Entrepreneurial Law Emphasis. The Law School also offers a Tax LL.M degree and a path for students to take a combined approach to pursuing the J.D. and Tax LL.M. In addition, students with potential interest in business-related fields are presented with a variety of skills training options through a team-taught Transactional Lawyering Skills Lab course and other simulation courses, an Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic, an Intellectual Property Clinic, and internship, externship, and supervised independent study opportunities. The School of Law also leads two national online community of practice platforms created with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation—Entrepreneurship Law and the Legal Technology Laboratory.

One component of the faculty position would be teaching a Business Organizations course. Beyond that, there is flexibility for candidates with business-oriented research and teaching interests to fashion a teaching package that could include a combination of: courses from among such subjects as Antitrust Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Securities Regulation; co-teaching in the Transactional Lawyering Skills Lab course, or in one of three innovative projects-based interdisciplinary entrepreneurship courses—Entrepreneurship & New Venture Creation, Entrepreneurial Urban Development, and Selected Projects in Law, Technology & Public Policy; or one or more other courses the candidate might propose to enrich the Law School’s business curriculum.

A J.D. or equivalent degree is required.

The position is a 9-month, full-time, benefit-eligible academic appointment eligible for tenure or tenure-track.


The salary is commensurate with rank, credentials and experience.
