The School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks to appoint an associate or full professor in literacy, language, and culture with a focus on early/elementary literacy.

We invite applicants whose scholarship focuses on elementary literacy education and whose research contributes to knowledge in the areas of teacher preparation, policy, and/or curriculum and pedagogy. We are particularly interested in scholars who engage with critical and/or anti-racist perspectives in their research with an eye to mitigating inequities that undermine literacy education as a tool for promoting social justice.

Applicants must focus on a specialization that advances scholarship in these areas, which may include the following:

• asset-based literacy instruction that supports students from culturally and linguistically diverse communities
• literacy development at home, in communities, and in school
• equitable approaches to assessment in literacy
• multimodal literacies in elementary education
• early literacy development and instruction

The successful applicant must form explicit connections between their work and SOE’s commitments to contribute to diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity.

Candidates should have strong knowledge of the field of literacy education and teaching experience in K-12 school contexts. Candidates should be prepared to participate actively in the School’s endeavors to transform initial teacher preparation in literacy, as well as to help grow the school's undergraduate and master’s-level offerings in literacy education. The successful candidate should, through his or her research, teaching, and/or service, contribute to the development of professionals who have the skills necessary to teach literacy effectively in a society that is increasingly diverse and whose schools are inequitably resourced. Another important component of this position is doctoral education. Candidates should be prepared to teach literacy courses in the doctoral program in Educational Studies in the School of Education. In addition to coursework, candidates should be prepared to participate in advising doctoral students, supervising their initial teaching experiences, and fostering the development of students as scholars, researchers, and teacher educators.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates will have:

• A doctoral degree in education with an emphasis in elementary literacy
• A research focus on one or more of the areas identified above
• Experience teaching at the K – 12 and university levels, including literacy methods courses
• An established program of research and publication in literacy education
• Working knowledge of a diverse array of research theories and methods
• A sustained interest in collaborating with different constituencies in the School of Education, schools, communities, and the university to engage in program design, instruction, and research in a coherent, practice-based teacher education program
• A sustained interest in collaborating with a similar set of constituencies to design and engage in research projects
• A commitment to diversity, inclusion, justice and equity, as evidenced through teaching, service and scholarship.
• Commitment to research and publication that informs teaching and learning in under-resourced schools with diverse students
• A track record of proposing and securing grants to support research
