Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati is seeking an innovative, energetic, and forward-thinking faculty member to join our growing programs in Exercise Science. This 9-month, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor-Educator of Exercise Science position is responsible for: (a) teaching a diverse set of undergraduate courses including online courses; (b) assisting with programmatic growth and development, which may include (but is not limited to) developing community partnerships, providing student professional development opportunities, overseeing experiential learning, and aiding in recruitment and retention of students; and (d) engaging in university, professional, and community service.

The Exercise Science program is housed under the Health Promotion & Education (HPE) umbrella, and directly offers a B.S. in Exercise Science and a M.S. in Health and Wellness Management. Students seeking the B.S. degree are interested in careers in strength and conditioning, fitness center management, wellness programming, cardiac rehabilitation, and more. The curriculum has a science base with robust applied practical learning opportunities and prepares students to sit for the NSCA-CSCS and ACSM-EP credentials upon graduation. The M.S. in Health and Wellness Management is an online graduate program focusing on wellness program leadership and health and wellness coaching.

The program is housed on the main campus of the University of Cincinnati, in the recently renovated Teachers-Dyer Complex. It oversees two lab spaces within the building, focused on strength, performance, and exercise physiology. Both lab spaces are equipped with current technology and equipment for practical teaching and research activities. Faculty within the program often collaborate with cross-campus and community partners in the fitness, sport performance, and wellness fields.

The HPE program is also part of an interdisciplinary B.S. in Public Health degree, a Master of Public Health degree, and offers a M.S. in Community Health & Prevention Science and a Ph.D. in Health Education. The program is also involved in several collaborative certificate and minor programs, including Sport Coaching and Yoga Studies. Future plans may involve the development of additional degrees and minors, including a graduate-level degree in the area of sport performance, a minor in Exercise Science, and national program accreditation.

The School of Human Services in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services also includes undergraduate and graduate programs in Sport Administration, Behavior Analysis, School Psychology, Counseling, and Substance Abuse Counseling. The School is a leader in online course and program development, and there are many active collaborative activities across programs and with community partners.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct and teach assigned undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses and seminars.
  • Attend meetings, participate in governance, prepare materials for teaching.
  • Evaluate and develop curriculum for department and/or college.
  • Serve as an academic adviser for students and evaluate student coursework.
  • Serve on college or university committees and participate in curriculum development activities.
  • Serve on graduate committees, supervise laboratories (where appropriate), independent study activities, and off-campus learning.
  • Engage in other activities ancillary to or in support of his or her responsibilities.
  • Render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty.
  • Review, and where necessary, respond in a timely manner to all University-related communications.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

• Earned Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, or related field.
• Ability to teach a variety of Exercise Science courses (both online and on-campus).
• Evidence of strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Earned Doctorate in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, or related field.
  • An equivalent of 4 or more years of relevant full-time work-experience.
  • Experience in mentoring students, such as through professional development, direct supervision, or capstone/research projects.
  • Professional-level certification(s), such as NSCA-CSCS or CPSS, CSCCa, or ACSM-EP or CEP, or the ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Other nationally-recognized fitness or wellness credentials, such as CPT, GFI, or NBC-HWC.
