Overview

The Custodian is a member of Facilities Operations and is committed to the success of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors by maintaining our beautiful campus. We seek individuals who will spend a significant portion of their time in campus buildings and interacting with the end-users to meet this expectation.

 

The Custodian is responsible for all phases of cleaning within the University. Our staff has a daily presence in every building on Princeton’s campus and provides cleaning and logistical support of campus events. We maintain student laundromats and campus fire extinguishers. Our team cares for over 10,000,000 square feet daily, and help setup and take down over 125 pieces of rental equipment each year. This position routinely interacts with members of the campus community and serves a vital role in providing excellent service.

 

The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 11:00am.

 

Starting hourly rate - $18.42

Responsibilities
  • Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
  • Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Empties waste receptacles and transports to designated containers for proper disposal.
  • Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
  • Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
  • May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
  • Able to exercise initiative in completing work assignments.
  • Able to work flexible hours, such as overtime, to meet the needs of the university operations.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Essential (including physical requirements):

  • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstration of good interpersonal and communication skills in reading, writing and in receiving oral instructions in English.
  • Demonstration of customer service with emphasis on positive attitude.
  • Able to learn how to operate equipment and practice current methods used in the cleaning industry.
  • Although not required to be a Custodian, in order to be able to drive the University golf carts/scooters to get around campus, you must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Able to stand or walk 2-4 hours at one time for 6-8 hours per day.
  • Able to lift or carry up to 10 pounds frequently (33% – 66% of the workday)
  • Able to lift or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the workday) and in a range of motions from floor to shoulder height.
  • Able to lift up to 30 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead.
  • Able to push or pull using forces up to 10 pounds constantly (over 66% of the workday).
  • Able to push or pull using forces up to 60 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the workday).
  • Able to frequently use hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling.
  • Able to bend, push, or pull frequently (33% - 66% of the workday).
  • Able to squat, kneel, climb, reach overhead, or lift overhead occasionally (up to 33% of the workday).
  • Able to climb stairs or ladder, shovel snow, and work outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Able to work at heights, possess full range of body motions and physical agility, and have the ability to maintain balance.

Preferred:

  • Experience in working in a higher education custodial environment or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in custodial or janitorial services.
  • Fundamental knowledge of computer skills, accessing online resources and trainings.
