The Position:
San Diego Miramar College welcomes applications for a full-time/ tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art History within the Visual and Performing Arts Department. We are seeking applicants with experience teaching a wide array of Art History courses from Prehistoric to Contemporary times with a Global Perspective. In particular, candidates with expertise teaching both Modern/Contemporary and Non-Western Art are desired. The Art History Program at San Diego Miramar College is small in size, with one additional full-time faculty member. The successful candidate will share responsibility teaching the courses currently available and developing new courses with the goal of expanding the Art History program. Currently we offer the following classes within the area of Art History:
  • The Arts of Asia
  • The Arts of Africa, Native America and Oceania
  • Art Orientation
  • Prehistoric to Gothic Art
  • Renaissance to Modern Art
  • Modern Art
  • Contemporary Art



The successful candidate will largely be responsible for teaching the Arts of Asia and The Arts of Africa, Native America & Oceania courses.We are seeking a colleague who is an expert in the discipline of Art History, as evidenced by academic achievement, professional activity in the field, and who has the vision to develop and expand the Art History program from a place of experience and excitement. Experience developing courses is strongly desired. Candidates possessing a demonstrated expertise in the discipline of Art History who are student-focused, and who approach their roles as educator and mentor through the lens that acknowledges, encourages and celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion are strongly encouraged to apply.To this end, the successful candidate will work collaboratively in respectful, diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings. In addition to Studio Art, the Department of Visual and Performing Arts is also home to the disciplines of Art History, Music, and Graphics.

Major Responsibilities:
Applications are currently being accepted for Assistant Professor of Art History located at San Diego Miramar College. Hours and days of assignment are as assigned, 40 hours per week. Selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department’s needs.The successful candidate will support our students by developing curriculum reflective of current pedagogy and professional trends in Art History, as well as by cultivating an inclusive learning environment as part of a socially and culturally engaged college.The teaching load will consist of undergraduate, transfer-based, foundation-level courses within the discipline of Art History. The successful candidate will take on the responsibility for the Non-Western courses offered in the program. As a member of the faculty, the successful candidate will also actively participate in the continued development of the Art History Program, with a focus on curriculum development and expansion within the Modern and Non-Western areas of the program.Additional duties include but are not limited to:· Advising/ mentoring students· Participation in service responsibilities, at all levels (District, College, School, Department)· Participation in shared-governance· Maintaining office hours· Working collaboratively and productively with colleagues campus-wide

Qualifications:
Master’s in fine arts, art, or art history OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in humanities OR the equivalent. (NOTE: “Master’s in fine arts” as used here refers to any master’s degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the “master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts of dance, film, video, photography, creaive writing, or other non-plastic arts.)

Desired Qualifications:
In addition, the successful candidate will also provide evidence of the following:
  1. An Art History Generalist with recent teaching experience in Art History at a community college or experience teaching lower level courses in Art History at a university.
  2. Experience teaching Non-Western Art History courses.
  3. Experience teaching with technology in both the classroom and online settings (including the use of a Learning Management System).
  4. An interdisciplinary, current approach to the field of Art History.
  5. Sensitivity to and awareness of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
  6. Ability to create an inclusive learning environment for heterogeneous groups of learners.
  7. Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, staff and students in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, service, and equity-minded practices to a diverse student population.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively.


Licenses:


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A – Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 – $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor. The San Diego Community College District serves 130,000 students annually through three two-year colleges and six Continuing Education campuses. The three colleges, San Diego City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges, offer associate degrees and certificates in occupational programs that prepare students for entry-level jobs, and arts and sciences programs that transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
