Director of Community Engaged Scholarship

Annual Salary: Minimum $70,000

The Director of Community Engaged Scholarship position is an LDA opportunity, with an expected duration of 2 years. A Limited Duration Appointment (LDA) is a form of regular employment for a specific project or for a limited period of time. An LDA may be established for up to one year with an option to renew the appointment annually for a maximum of three years. To establish an LDA, approval by the campus human resources office is required before the initial appointment and before any subsequent annual renewal of the appointment beyond the first year. Also required is an appointment letter indicating the maximum length and other conditions of the appointment.   

Position Summary:

Engaging with the broader community remains a top priority for the University of Tennessee. The Office of Community Engagement and Outreach (OCEO) seeks a full-time Director to provide leadership for the community engaged scholarship. OCEO was established as part of UT’s effort to more deeply integrate community engagement into its land-grant mission of teaching, research, and engagement. OCEO leads campus efforts around community engagement, engaged scholarship, and outreach and is increasing in scope to partner with a variety of campus units as well as increasing our community collaborations for broader impacts. The Director of Community Engaged Scholarship will be responsible for developing, growing, and sustaining multi-stakeholder relationships that promote UT’s research, innovation, and entrepreneurship on local communities and regions within the state, including but not limited to local and state agencies, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, municipalities, industry partners, alumni, and opinion leaders. This position will provide leadership, develop, and implement strategies that enhance and support the University’s commitment to community, based on best practices and emerging research on community engaged scholarship, while also supervising OCEO staff. The Director is responsible for creating a sense of community on campus and the creation and continuation of university-community partnerships that engage our faculty and students in solving grand challenges and real-world problems. This position will lead efforts to create and strengthen partnerships between UT as a campus, colleges, departments, and individuals and groups of faculty and external stakeholders to develop collaborations.



Qualifications
Job Function/Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement strategies that enhance and support the University’s commitment to community, based on best practices and emerging research on community engagement and outreach.
• Utilize the University’s resources, research, and other output to strengthen communities across Tennessee through alignment of UT’s land grant mission and commitment to public engagement.
• Initiate and facilitate University interactions with community organizations to link the community-campus partnership requests with the research and teaching interests of faculty, students and staff.
• Liaise with the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development.
• Oversee internal competitive funding process.
• Offer a variety of professional development opportunities for faculty that are community engaged scholars.
• Work closely with, and serve as the primary contact for, the Community-University Research Collaborative Initiative.
• Collaborate with and serve as an ex-officio member of faculty-led Academic Outreach and Engagement Council.
• Maintain a competitive funding process to support faculty who engage the community. Students and alumni involvement in community engagement shall be encouraged.
• Develop metrics, tracking and assessments.
• Serve as chair of the campus-wide Carnegie Community Engagement Advisory Committee.
• Create, cultivate, and strengthen relationships between UT and external stakeholders engaged with communities.
• Develop and execute public events to advance the University’s community engagement priorities.
• Oversee marketing and communication efforts to promote the positive activities within the Office of Community Engagement and Outreach.
• Work with campus partners to maintain Carnegie Community Engagement Classification and the University’s submission for the C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award.
• Serve as the primary point of contact with the Engagement Scholarship Consortium.

Leadership/Management/Supervision

• Daily supervision of OCEO staff including Coordinators, Graduate Research Assistant, Faculty Fellow, interns, and volunteers
• Direct Community Engagement Academy, broader impacts workshops, and all community engaged scholarship initiatives
• Direct Community Engagement Seminar Series
• Direct Community Conversations
• Lead and manage annual Engagement and Outreach Conference/Week
• Lead and manage annual Nonprofit Day
• Oversee Community Connect Portal
• Oversee Interactive Engagement Map
• Lead Carnegie Community Engagement Classification and reclassification process
• Coordinate and oversee the annual Partnerships That Make a Difference publication

Communication

• Coordinate, create, and manage all gravity forms and other forms for the division
• Coordinate and provide editorial support for print and digital materials for division
• Coordinate and creates new publications, toolkits, and resources.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

• Ideal candidate has a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Public Policy, or a field related to community engaged scholarship and seven years of relevant experience.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and execute programs or activities involving the campus community and/or external organizations.
• Seven years of progressively responsible and recent management experience in higher education or public sector related areas is required.
• General understanding of the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification is required.
• Experience as a faculty member/ teaching.
• Experience with both print and web-based writing is preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Master’s degree required
• Knowledge of Smart Communities Initiative
• Experience working with communities is preferred
• Experience working with college faculty and college students is preferred
• Knowledge and experience with event management is preferred

Required level/type of experience and/or years of experience:

• Minimum seven years of relevant experience with master’s degree
• Experience functioning in a dynamic environment required
 

Preferred level/type of experience and/or years of experience:

• PhD preferred
• Experience and knowledge of community engaged scholarship, and working with community partners and stakeholders
• Teaching experience at the collegiate level, knowledge and experience working with college faculty and college students
