Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the President, the successful candidate will oversee a portfolio that includes Financial Services; Facilities Services and Capital Planning; Real Estate and Business Operations; Budget Planning and Analysis; and Compliance and Risk Management for the system. WSU is looking for an EVP who will continue to execute on WSU’s many initiatives and provide leadership and strategic vision during WSU’s next phase of growth and success. Consequently, the EVP will need to be a seasoned leader with a track record of success in complex and ambiguous environments and have an affinity and talent for collaboration and a penchant for creativity and innovation. The EVP will bring enthusiasm and capacity both to leading a large, multi-faceted operation and playing a strategic role in the advancement of the university's goals and vision for the future and will work collaboratively across the system to address a number of key priorities, including:

  • Champion a successful implementation of the system’s new budget model

  • Advance the OneWSU System

  • Leverage and optimize systems to create a university system-wide culture grounded in equity, continuous and integrated planning, assessment, and improvement

  • Bring visionary, innovative, and long-term strategic thinking that will help position WSU for the future

  • Empower and support a talented and diverse staff

  • Ensure the financial and operational health of the organization

  • Lead organizational change to position WSU for ongoing success in a rapidly evolving environment

Essential Functions

System Strategic Direction

  • Provide oversight for the financial and physical assets of Washington State University (WSU). This includes all aspects of the University’s system wide financial and capital planning, compliance and risk management, and real estate portfolio.

  • The EVPBA-CFO is the chief fiscal officer charged with the fiduciary responsibility for the integrity of the OneWSU system.

  • Directs the OneWSU system’s finance, budget and business operations, procurement and contracting and related support functions and ensures that business systems, policies and procedures are in compliance and aligned with short-and long-term goals and objectives.

  • Oversees the administration of public safety and emergency management; internal audit and enterprise project management. In collaboration with the President’s executive council, guide major resource deployment, organizational functionality, and strategic decision-making.

  • Manages a broad portfolio of functions including finance, budget, controller’s office, investments, treasury, compliance and risk management, public safety, real estate, and business services.

  • Lead the efficient and effective budget and financial operations in support of the OneWSU system, ensuring the highest standards of fiscal and administrative integrity and providing exceptional support and services to faculty, staff and students.

Organizational Development/Supervision

  • Responsible to assess current and future organizational structure for administrative services across the WSU system and provide the President with recommendations of for possible realignment.

  • Promotes a culture of excellence, inclusion, innovation, accountability, and transparency by engaging key stakeholders identify opportunities to achieve excellence and to ensure alignment of financial and operational strategies with the OneWSU land-grant mission.

Constituent Relations

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining excellent relationships with senior leadership, campus administrators, Board of Regents, state and local government officials, community leaders, faculty, students and staff.

  • Oversees a variety of statewide and institutional activities; represent the University to governmental agencies, professional organizations and a wide range of external constituencies; serves on various boards and makes presentations and participates in public meetings as necessary.

Executive/Senior Staff Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of the President’s Executive Council, System Leadership Councils and Senior Staff.

  • This position also serves as the Treasurer for the WSU Board of Regents.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least twelve (12) years of progressively responsible experience in financial administration, analysis, or planning which has included demonstrated leadership ability and management skill in a large complex organization involving distributed electronic financial management systems. A Master’s degree in a relevant field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Senior-level management experience in an institution of higher education, governmental organization or a comparable corporate environment.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
