Position Summary:

The Department of Microbiology at the University of Georgia invites applications for a limited-term lecturer faculty position in Microbiology, beginning January 1, 2023. Limited-term faculty may be renewed annually for a maximum of two years. Any request for reappointment of limited-term faculty beyond the second year requires pre-approval by the Provost.

This position involves management of the undergraduate microbiology degree program of the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences at the UGAGriffin Campus in Griffin, GA. Responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester, the management, maintenance, and general oversight of the laboratory equipment and other items involved in the microbiology degree program offered by the College at the Griffin Campus; supervision of staff hired to assist with the operations of the laboratory programs; handling the weekly preparation of reagents and disposal of waste; recommending improvements necessary to maintain a contemporary biological sciences degree program.

Specific responsibilities include teaching three upper-division biological science lecture or laboratory courses each semester in the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences B.S. degree program; and supervision of the overall operation of the undergraduate microbiology degree program of the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences at the Griffin Campus. This supervision includes assigning duties and monitoring the performance of staff hired to assist in the program, identifying equipment and reagents to be ordered, preparing reagents needed for laboratory experiments, handing out and putting away laboratory items and teaching kits used by students, maintaining laboratory and prep/equipment rooms in proper and safe condition, informing laboratory staff about proper safety regulations and “Hazard Right-to-Know” laws, and arranging for proper disposal of laboratory waste.

Additional Requirements:

Candidates should be legally eligible to work in the United States at the time of appointment. A minimum of 2 semesters of prior experience as a course instructor or teaching assistant is required.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

At least 2 semesters of prior experience as a course instructor is preferred. At least 1 semester of experience as a laboratory course instructor is preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong background in the principles and experimental techniques of the modern biological sciences, excellent organizational skills, and strong oral and written communication skills. The strongest applicants will have training in Microbiology as well as some background in Biochemistry and Cell Biology.
