The ARC Training Specialist – ARC Training and Education Unit will be the “go-to person” for successful onboarding and implementation of various ARC educational initiatives, those which are critical to the safe and responsible conduct of research involving laboratory animals.

 

The work conducted by the specialist is concerned with the effective transfer of knowledge and skills required to work with laboratory animals in a responsible and rigorous manner. The specialist must develop and administer innovative and strategically aligned educational programs with the intent to increase research rigor and reproducibility while ensuring compliance with institutional, regulatory, and operational policies and procedures.

 

The incumbent should possess proven teaching and training skills, as well as proficiency with learning management systems and computer software to develop, administer and document training activities. The specialist must have strong organizational and communication skills to transfer training. Training must be developed using proven learning methods with an emphasis on learner engagement through gamification and other methods.

 

The specialist will leverage operational and employee performance data, use anecdotal insight, and consult with the research community to manage current and future training initiatives.


Responsibilities

    Conduct departmental orientation, job training and technical procedure training
      Laboratory animal techniques: blood collection, substance administration, surgical techniques, handling and restraint, permanent animal ID methods, gender identification, tissue biopsy, use of anesthetics and analgesics
    Develop instructor led training, web-based training, departmental facility signage and training materialsSystem administrator of learning management systems and online learning libraries
      AALAS Learning Library, CITI Programs, WorkDay
    Use of training/survey software
      Venngage, Biteables, Survey Monkey, MS Office, SharePoint, Teams, Adobe, access, Website development, electronic bulletin board, Survey Monkey
    Monitor training status reportsUse of audiovisual technologyKey facilitator in facility access and security applicationsConduct root cause and training needs analysesTechnical and creative writing skills (e.g., SOPs, policies, docs, signs, training etc.)Active participation in program review and triennial AAALAC visitCollaborate with ARC senior staff, BME, BMC, EHS, Occ. Health, Security, HRLDLean Six Sigma Yellow and Green Belt certification is required after 18 mosOrganize AALAS certification study groups and support ARC employees to get AALAS certificationOther duties as assigned

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or education, plus 2 or more years of in-vivo technical procedure training highly preferred

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Department of Justice FBI Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval, and USDA/CDC Select Agent Program approval. This includes initial and periodic drug screenings.

  • Minimum Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in laboratory animal sciences required.
  • One (1) year of experience managing and delivering training in a laboratory animal operations or similar environment.
  • Two years of experience in teaching and training in-vivo research models highly preferred.

  • Required Credentials

     
    Other Credentials

  • Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required within 18 months of hire.
