Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Provost Communications works directly with the Provost, Chief of Staff, the Provost Leadership Team, and other University leaders and partners to develop academic and strategic communications on behalf of the Office of the Provost in support of the University’s academic mission. Responsibilities include development of essential Provost communications (university messages, talking points, correspondence, newsletters), oversight of digital media (website content, social media), and creative support. The Assistant Director of Provost Communications is responsible for executing and updating the Provost’s Office Communication Plan centered around the key messages of faculty excellence, student success, university excellence, and inclusive excellence. Additionally, this individual will directly partner with Communications & External Relations and serve as a liaison with communication leads in all schools and university initiatives.

Essential Functions:

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Partners with the Provost, Chief of Staff and campus partners to create, execute, and refine the Provost’s Office Communication Plan to ensure effective communications with campus constituents and support for the University’s overall communications plan.
  • Works collaboratively with Communications and External Relations (CER) and all university schools (Business, College, Divinity, Graduate, Law, Professional Studies) and the Z. Smith Reynolds Library to set a standard for high-caliber, integrative and forward thinking communications that model the values and aspirations of the university.
  • Drafts university-wide academic communications on behalf of the Provost’s Office and in partnership with Communications and External Relations.
  • Develops centralized, transparent and collaborative communications processes in the Provost’s office.
  • Researches and drafts talking points for the Provost’s use at University events on and off campus.
  • Develops more powerful branding for the Provost’s office through story-telling narratives and other initiatives.
  • Manages the Provost’s Office website through dynamic content and structure and manages digital and social media presence by highlighting faculty, student, and university achievements.
  • In partnership with CER and other campus partners, works and advises on design needs and materials for the Provost’s Office.
  • Collaborates on academic communications to the University community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Serves as the main liaison and convener of individual school communication leads to share resources and campus communications.
  • Shares oversight of the university cascade review process in the Office of the Provost, sometimes in a timely and urgent matter.
  • Develops reports and analyses to help assess effectiveness of Provost’s office communications, and as needed for the Provost in collaboration with the Chief of Staff.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree with five to seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with technology and computers, including demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and the ability to learn website management and other relevant software.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter; a person with a strong work ethic who takes initiative, works with minimal supervision, and completes tasks without prompting.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; strong command of grammar and English usage in professional business communications, which includes accuracy in proofreading, composing correspondence, editing, and typing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work professionally, courteously and effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, including students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and dependability.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusive excellence that is reflected in all communications work.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information and records in accordance with state and federal laws and professional ethics; ability to manage and distribute information appropriately.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience with graphic design.
  • Master’s degree in relevant field
