About Department:

Student Academic Engagement and Success (SAES), an area within the Office of the Provost, works to ensure that SMU undergraduate students are aware of the academic opportunities and support systems that operate across campus to ensure their academic success and enrich their experiences inside and outside the classroom.

We partner with the Associate Provosts for Curricular Innovation and Policy and Faculty Affairs, Associate Provost for Institutional Planning and Effectiveness, and Directors of Assessment, the Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management, and Associate Deans to develop a comprehensive retention and graduation strategy for all undergraduate students.

About the Position:

The Assistant Dean for Scholars Programs is responsible for the operations, strategy, and recruitment for two of SMU’s central scholars programs: the President’s Scholars Program and the Nancy Ann and Ray L. Hunt Leadership Scholars Program.

The Assistant Dean manages these two distinctive scholars programs in their entirety: from the scholars’ point of application to the University, through their graduation, and into their alumni experience. Additionally, the Assistant Dean will provide supervision to the Director of the Mustang Scholars Program and First-Generation Initiative.

Essential Functions:

Recruit new scholars through collaboration with Office of Undergraduate Admission and growing program brands at a national level (includes pre-application recruitment and post-decision yield) and manage the highly competitive application and review process to select new scholars Advise and mentor current scholars during their tenure as undergraduate students (includes annual check ins, students on probation, students undertaking new projects, etc.) Collaborate with faculty advisors and strategic campus partners to effectively execute each program’s goals (i.e. admission, college and schools, advising, financial aid, study abroad, student affairs, intradepartmental collaborations, University committees) and mange each programs budget to meet these program goals. Provide leadership to all scholar programs related to financial aid processes.Foster and maintain alumni and donor relationships and seek new development opportunities in conjunction with Office of Development and External Affairs.  Donor opportunities include these programs as well as increasing resources that benefit the overall honors and scholars program. Oversee budgets and expenses related to the scholar programs and initiative.Collaborate with the Honors and Scholars Programs Program Specialist and support their work in planning and executing various student experiences. Attend events for each program and the broader honors and scholars community.Provide supervision to the Director of Mustang Scholars Program & the First-Generation Initiative. Facilitate staff meetings, aid strategic planning for the program and initiative, and ensure risk management related to events.Teach up to 6 credit hours annually that directly benefit students in the Hunt or PS programs.  For example, offering EPL 3101, 3102, and 3302 to Hunt Leadership ScholarsCollaborate with the Directors of other scholars programs in order to meet the University goals and priorities (e.g. Rotunda Scholars, Mustang Scholars, BBA Scholars, Dedman Scholars, etc.). Develop and execute assessments of student learning related to scholar programs and the initiative.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Master’s degree required, preferably in higher education or a related field. Terminal degree in higher education, social sciences or humanities strongly preferred

A minimum of three years professional work experience with selective admission, student advising, and/or program management is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Candidate must demonstrate strong time management, organizational and planning skills. Must also have strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions.

Candidate must possess strong project management skills, including the ability to define goal/objective of the initiative and the means to achieve the goal. A strong focus on attention to detail is essential.

Candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office. A working knowledge of PeopleSoft, and/or admissions and enrollment management software desired. The ability to manage, understand, and employ student data relevant for program decisions is a plus.
