About the Department of Teacher Education and Learning SciencesThe Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) comprises over 40 full-time faculty members, 300 undergraduate students, and 200 graduate students. The department offers a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Learning Sciences with specializations in Educational Equity; Educational Psychology; Elementary Education; Learning, Design, and Technology; Literacy and English Language Arts Education; and Social Studies Education. It awards Master’s degrees in Curriculum and Developmental Supervision, Educational Psychology, Elementary Education, Learning Design and Technology, New Literacies and Global Learning, and Special Education, as well as undergraduate degrees in Elementary Education (emphasizing mathematics and science) and Middle Grades English Language Arts and Social Studies Education. The Department of Teacher Education & Learning Sciences (TELS) in the College of Education at NC State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Elementary Education with an emphasis on preparing/developing elementary teachers of mathematics and conducting synergistic research. The faculty member will work in the Elementary Education in Mathematics and Science (EEMS) doctoral concentration, specifically with doctoral students who choose a mathematics focus. The faculty member will also prepare prospective elementary teachers to teach mathematics and contribute to the mathematics specialist graduate program (M.Ed.) for practicing teachers.
Essential Job Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Establish and maintain a scholarly research, publication, and grant-writing record on mathematics teaching and/or learning in the elementary grades;
- Teach elementary mathematics methods courses for preservice teachers (undergraduate and master’s). Teach graduate courses for K-6 practicing teachers seeking mathematics specialization.
- Teach graduate courses in PhD programs, including interdisciplinary courses in the Department of TELS and in the College of Education;
- Advise undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students;
- Recruit and mentor graduate students in research;
- Provide outreach and service for Department and College initiatives, especially for underserved communities and high- needs areas;
- Provide service and leadership to the program area(s), department, college, university, and professional organizations;
- Contribute to program design, development, and evaluation at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels;
- Participate in outreach and engagement activities;
- Collaborate with faculty within the college and across the university.
Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Education and Experience:
Other Required Qualifications:
- PhD or EdD in mathematics education, elementary education, or a closely related field, with a research focus on mathematics teaching/learning in the elementary grades.
- Successful record of scholarly research and publication focused on PK-6 mathematics education, commensurate with rank and appropriate for a Research University (very high research activity).
- Potential to secure externally-funded projects.
- Experiences with PK-6 students.
- Demonstrated capacity to work with diverse students as well as to prepare future education professionals to work with diverse populations.
Required License(s) or Certification(s):
- Three or more years of teaching experience in PK-12 schools or equivalent settings;
- A research focus on students’ and/or teachers’ learning of mathematics in the elementary grades (PK-6) that may include issues such as equity, policy, or agency;
- Experiences in the preparation or development of prospective and/or practicing elementary teachers in mathematics;
- Demonstrated ability to understand and apply skills of effective digital instructional technologies within courses or other professional development settings.
