About the Department

The top-ranked School of Criminal Justice (SoCJ) is home to over 1,000 students pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Degrees. Through classroom instruction, engaged and interactive mentoring, and close connection with agencies nationally and internationally, the highly productive and experienced faculty foster the production, translation, and dissemination of rigorous, multi-disciplinary science to drive impactful change and improve theoretical understanding and practical action across many sub-disciplines of criminal justice and criminology.

Job Overview

Assist the Principal Investigator in a given department or field. The incumbent will conduct research and/or analyze research data and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of the University of Cincinnati. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.

The postdoctoral researcher selected for this opportunity will conduct mentored research under Drs. JC Barnes and Paula Smith. Candidates will have opportunities to contribute to multiple research projects related to the use of evidence-based practices in criminal justice and corrections, but the primary assignment will be to a study funded by the Ohio School Safety Center to provide resources to school personnel, community partners, students, and families to utilize the best available practices to effectively prevent, prepare for, and respond to threats and acts of violence.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct research experiments in a particular field within the pre-determined research scope and methodology.
  • Gather and analyze data and develop new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepare data summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations of research results.
  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentation; may assist in grant writing.
  • Keep informed of developments in field to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies, as needed.
  • May teach techniques to others, train, and mentor junior research staff.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
  • Play an active role in seeking career and research advice, both from the faculty supervisor and from other faculty members as well.

Minimum Requirements
  • PhD from an accredited institution of higher education in Criminal Justice or related discipline.
  • In-depth knowledge of evidence-based practices in criminal justice and corrections.
  • Demonstrated research experience.
  • Demonstrated data management and analysis experience.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Required Education

Doctoral Degree in the appropriate field or discipline, or the recognized terminal degree, or the equivalent foreign equivalent.

Required Experience
  • In-depth knowledge of specialized field, process or discipline.
  • May require experience with specialized software programs.
