Philosophy Tenure Track Faculty Position

Rank: Assistant Professor
Tenure Information: Tenure Track

Job Description
Sarah Lawrence College invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in philosophy to begin in fall 2023. We seek a candidate with deep engagement in any area of Continental Philosophy (e.g., ethics, socio-political philosophy, aesthetics). The successful candidate will have broad interests and competence in the history of philosophy. We have preference for candidates whose work and/or teaching experience engages art or the philosophy of art, including film.

Sarah Lawrence is a small liberal arts college with a dynamic and holistic curriculum, designed to foster students' capacity to develop a program of study unique to them. We therefore welcome candidates who are intellectually versatile and well-rounded, interested in designing and teaching a wide range of courses, including those outside of their area of expertise, and willing to advise students of diverse interests, backgrounds, and trajectories. The position is teaching intensive, involving two courses per semester. Beyond class instruction, each of these courses includes a significant component of individualized or small-group work with students. We encourage candidates to familiarize themselves with the basics of this distinctive pedagogical model before applying and to indicate in their letters how they envision working in this format.

Applications should include the following documents: cover letter; CV; statement of teaching philosophy, including consideration of pedagogical and curricular inclusivity; evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., teaching evaluations); two sample syllabi for courses that the candidate might offer at Sarah Lawrence, including at least one course in aesthetics and the philosophy of art; a sample of academic writing; and three letters of recommendation. Consideration begins on November 20, 2022.

Required Qualifications
