The beginnings of Georgetown University Press can be traced to 1964 - and we currently publish approximately forty new titles per year, as well as two journals, with an active list of more than 1,000 titles across the fields of languages & linguistics, international affairs, religion & theology, political science, regional studies, and global business and the global economy. These publications primarily service the scholarly community, and many also reach the general reading public. Many help to unite people speaking different languages, literally and figuratively, and all attempt to illuminate, clarify, and respond to the world's most difficult questions.

Job Overview

The Acquisitions Editor/Textbook Program Manager, is part of the acquisitions team within GU Press and is within the languages team, focusing entirely on languages and linguistics books and products.

They manage the maintenance of longstanding textbook projects and products, support the continued acquisition and development of new textbook and linguistics titles, and acquire new textbooks and new linguistics books and products for the list.

As well, they have a key role in maintaining and developing new digital products to support GU Press's core language textbooks; communicating with customers, GU Press colleagues, and vendors about digital products; collaborating with other GU Press departments to maintain marketing websites for core language textbooks; managing the multimedia for all language textbooks; aiding in the development of language textbooks and digital products (working with authors, vendor, and supervisor, and peer reviewers); and acquiring a small number of language or linguistics titles annually.

GU Press is an academic book publisher. One of our core areas is textbooks for teaching and learning world languages.

The Acquisitions Editor/Textbook Program Manager has a critical role in the acquisitions program. They work directly with our existing content to add new products and new authors to contribute to the growth of the GU Press list. Their work ensures that the best books are published on a predicted timeline.

Reporting to the Director, Georgetown Languages, they support the creation of new and maintain existing digital products associated with printed language textbooks; and may also assist in the development of e-textbooks. Each of these products helps make the textbooks more attractive to potential adopters and, thus, has the potential to contribute to increasing GU Press revenue.

The Acquisitions Editor/Textbook Program Manager also works on the development of the print textbooks through such things as working with authors, aiding with peer review, and seeking new authors; and they have the opportunity to acquire and to be the editor of a small number of language or linguistics titles.

Our textbooks are one way that GU Press works toward supporting the mission of the university is through its publication of reasonably priced textbooks for learning world languages. Not only do our publications showcase the university's strengths in language learning and global education, the university's name is on the shelves of many students and teachers around the world.

Qualifications
  • BA in linguistics or a language other than candidate's first language - preference for MA
  • 5 to7 years of experience in academic publishing
  • Knowledge of language learning pedagogy either from coursework or work experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects from start to finish, on time and within budget
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders


Preferred qualifications
  • 1 to 2 years of work in textbook publishing, specifically
  • Knowledge of Arabic
  • Understanding how to work with non-Western scripts in a digital environment
