Description
The Associate Director, Student Life (Student Media) is responsible for management, supervision and operation of all facets of the unit of Student Media within Student Life. Student Media’s purpose is to produce, market and distribute all student publications and other media for the Georgia State University campuses and to provide a hands-on training laboratory in which students can gain real-life communications skills which assists with employment upon graduation. 

 

Based on the Atlanta campus, with oversight for student media outlets on all Georgia State University campuses, including Perimeter College, this position has responsibilities including, but not limited to, recruiting, training, and advising students who contribute to The Signal student newspaper, WRAS 88.5 FM college radio, New South graduate literary journal, Underground undergraduate literary journal, Neo Network video production group, facility/equipment inventory, and financial oversight of all student media, and maintenance and development of the Student Media website and related social media platforms. This position supervises multiple staff and advises student leaders who are involved in various student media registered student organizations. 

 

Of note, WRAS-FM is a 100,000-watt radio station of Georgia State University with a contractual partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting for sharing of air time.  This role ensures the legal operation of the station, including remaining current with and enforcing the rules and regulations of the FCC, FAA and OSHA in regard to radio station operations. Training of all current university student staff to be on the air is provided by this role.  

 

Areas of training include news, feature, multimedia and broadcast reporting and editing; photography; design; management; marketing and advertising; business operations; communications; broadcast management, and libel and slander law. The successful candidate in this position will be expected to obtain College Media Association adviser certification within the first year of employment. 

 



Qualifications
Minimum Hiring Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and four years of supervisory/management experience; or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

Masters degree and four years of supervisory/management experience working with students at a college or university level. Experience in the professional field working with print, advertising, broadcast and/or digital media. Knowledge of newspaper printing and integration of digital media innovation within the traditional printing operation. Solid knowledge of journalism style and media ethics. Ability to speak to students and professionals in large and small groups to fulfill recruiting and advising responsibilities. Knowledge and practical implementation of marketing strategies to position all operational elements for success.  College Media Association certification, if not already, must be achieved within first year of employment.

The Georgia State Panthers are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and compete in 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track and volleyball. The university announced in April 2008 that is will begin Division I-AA football in 2010.

The university’s innovative Touch the Earth program brings outdoor recreation ranging from backpacking, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking, rafting and water-skiing to out-of-state snow-skiing and snorkeling trips.
