Tracking Code22599930090829Job Description

The Department of Environmental Health at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) is excited to announce the recruitment of candidates for multiple new faculty positions. We are seeking versatile, collaborative, and exceptionally creative faculty motivated to understand and improve population health at any scale from local to global.

This is an open rank recruitment. The successful candidates will have evidence of strong potential for establishing an independent, extramurally-funded research program, a demonstrated interest in teaching, and a commitment to activist public health. BUSPH believes that the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our research and academic programs. We are eager to recruit colleagues who support our commitment to ensuring BU is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and a place where all community members can thrive.

Boston University is an Association of American Universities institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. We are proud to be the first American university to award a Ph.D. to a woman, and we continue that tradition of educating a diverse and talented student body. The School of Public Health takes the University’s commitment even further with its own detailed plan for fostering a diverse and inclusive community.

Founded in 1976, BUSPH ranks as the sixth leading public health school in the country, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report graduate school rankings. We offer master's- and doctoral-level education in public health along with post-doctoral training. With over 300 faculty in six departments, the School conducts policy-changing public health research, with the mission of improving the health of populations—especially the underserved—locally and globally.

The Department of Environmental Health is comprised of 20 primary faculty and is internationally recognized for innovation in research, scholarship, and teaching. We investigate the pressing environmental challenges of our time, including legacy and emerging contaminants, air pollution, and complex mixtures of chemical and non-chemical stressors in occupational and residential settings, and we investigate the impact of these exposures across the life course. Additionally, the school-wide Center for Climate and Health at BUSPH is led by environmental health faculty. Across all domains, we emphasize solutions-oriented work in partnership with communities, with explicit consideration of environmental racism and justice. Faculty who join the Department have access to BU’s world class computing facilities and faculty expertise, and the opportunity to collaborate with other university centers including the Institute for Global Sustainability, the Initiative on Cities, and the Center for Antiracist Research. Faculty receive mentorship and development opportunities to position them for success.

Required Skills

Qualifications. Candidates should have a PhD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in public health or a related field, demonstrated potential for outstanding scholarship through publication and/or externally funded research, as well as a commitment to graduate education and mentorship of students. Successful candidates will be expected to lead an independent research program, actively engage in collaborative research; participate in teaching and mentoring master’s and doctoral-level students; and provide stage-appropriate service to the department, university and profession. We especially welcome applicants who are passionate about environmental justice and strong communicators. The search is not focused on a specific area of environmental health, and we welcome applicants from diverse disciplines, including those with qualitative and quantitative backgrounds.

The School of Public Health actively seeks to enrich its student and faculty ranks, recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor. We seek to embed—within our curricular and co-curricular activities—the principle that pluralism within a learning community is a source of insight and effectiveness.

Applicants should provide a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a research statement describing their research interests and previous experience; a teaching and mentoring statement detailing their teaching experience and their approach to mentoring trainees; and a diversity statement that details how their leadership will promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice at our school at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22081.

Application review will begin September 15, 2022 and continue until the positions are filled.

Please note all newly hired staff and faculty will need to be in compliance with Boston University’s COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster Requirement within 30 days of date of hire. You must upload your vaccine documentation or request a medical or religious exemption (instructions). The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
