Tenure-track Faculty Position in Criminology
(Assistant or Associate Professor)
Associated with Two Clusters of 10 New Faculty Positions
The College of New Jersey

To enrich education through diversity, TCNJ is an Equal Opportunity Employer. TCNJ has a strong commitment to inclusive excellence and is working to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice among our faculty, staff, and students. We strongly encourage a host of diverse, intersectional populations and cultures to apply including, but not limited to, identities based on race, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, and veteran status.

The Department of Criminology at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a 10-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Criminology to join our community starting in August 2023.

Position Summary:

The successful candidate will teach existing courses in the Department’s curriculum and develop courses based on their area(s) of expertise using an approach that centers social justice and/or racial justice in pedagogy and praxis. We seek a colleague with the expertise to explore race and racism, whiteness/white privilege, and/or anti-racism in their teaching and research.

The standard teaching load is three courses per semester. Incoming faculty members receive a course reassignment per year in two of their first three academic years. After their third year, faculty members can apply for a competitive course reassignment of one course per academic year. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to advise a cohort of majors beginning in their second year.

We are interested in candidates whose research and teaching will connect and integrate with other disciplines and who have the potential to collaboratively contribute to interdisciplinary curricular and scholarly efforts.

Candidates should be committed to inclusive excellence in higher education, demonstrated through, for example, culturally responsive course design and pedagogy, equity-minded student engagement and mentorship, and cultivating intercultural competencies needed for meaningful citizenship.

TCNJ has a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in our community and to supporting a healthy work-life balance for our faculty of teacher-scholars. Teaching and research/scholarship/creative expression are mutually supportive activities at TCNJ. Candidates should be strongly committed to the teacher-scholar model, to maintaining both high quality teaching and an active and productive program of scholarship, and to encouraging and mentoring highly motivated students in intensive work both inside and outside the classroom. Faculty members are encouraged and supported in seeking external funding consistent with this mission. They also serve as academic advisors and have service responsibilities within their department, school, and the college. TCNJ supports its community of teacher-scholars through a progressive faculty workload model, generous internal grant and sabbatical programs, professional travel, engaging professional development programs, and other mechanisms. These intentional efforts support the recruitment, retention, and success of our faculty, particularly our teacher-scholars from groups traditionally underrepresented in academe.

Linkage to Two Thematic Clusters:

We are especially interested in candidates who could contribute to either or both of the TCNJ’s two thematic clusters (broadly defined): Data-/Cyber-connected disciplines and Social/Racial Justice. The hires will build-on and expand existing faculty strengths in these areas – with an array of institutional supports for them – bringing a cluster of 10 new teacher-scholars and practitioners across a range of academic fields/departments to TCNJ (Accounting; Computer Science; Counselor Education; Criminology; Management; Music; Political Science; Statistics; and Special Education, Language, and Literacy).

Qualifications:

Applicants should:

  • Have a PhD or be ABD in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field. ABDs will be considered only if the degree will be completed prior to the start date.  At the rank of Assistant Professor, have the potential or demonstrated ability to effectively teach criminology courses at the college-level that focus on social justice and/or racial justice, and a related research agenda that is clearly defined and shows promise. At the rank of Associate Professor, have demonstrated ability to effectively teach criminology courses at the college-level that focus on social justice and/or racial justice, and a related research agenda that is clearly defined and productive. Demonstrate cultural competency and ability to foster inclusive learning environments and mutual respect for students and colleagues.

  • At the rank of Associate Professor, experience in department leadership and interest in serving as chairperson.

Leigey, Chair of the Search Committee, and be sent directly to leigeym@tcnj.edu; the candidate’s name should be included in the subject line of the e-mail.

Applications should be submitted electronically to https://tcnj.taleo.net/careersection/00_ex_faculty/jobdetail.ftl?job=22002244&lang=en.   Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. About The College of New Jersey:

Founded in 1855, TCNJ is a selective public institution that has earned national recognition for its commitment to excellence. TCNJ enrolls approximately 7,400 students, including 6,790 undergraduates and 610 graduate students, 30% of whom are self-described as members of groups traditionally underrepresented in academe. Strong curricular and co-curricular programming have helped foster a first-year to sophomore retention rate of 92%, a 4-year graduation rate of 75% (7th highest in the U.S. for public institutions), and a 6-year graduation rate of 87% (among the highest in the country). Five signature experiences are the hallmark of a TCNJ education: a personalized, collaborative, and rigorous education; undergraduate research, mentored internships, and field experiences; community engaged learning; global engagement; and leadership development. TCNJ has also received national recognition for the adoption and promotion of the teacher-scholar model for our faculty. A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation for programs offered through TCNJ’s seven academic schools—Arts and Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Nursing and Health Sciences; and Science. TCNJ has a strong Phi Beta Kappa chapter—an honor shared by less than 10 percent of colleges and universities nationally.

Among other initiatives, a series of faculty/staff-based affinity groups (e.g., Minority Executive Council, Women’s Professional Network, Parent and Family Network, TCNJ PRIDE) supports a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment at TCNJ.

TCNJ is located within an hour of New York City and Philadelphia. The College’s campus is set on 289 tree-lined acres in suburban Ewing Township and is known for its natural beauty. In addition to its growing racial and ethnic diversity, the region offers excellent public schools, prestigious medical centers, restaurants, art and entertainment, as well as numerous cultural and recreational activities.

Organization

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is a highly selective institution that has earned national recognition for its commitment to excellence. Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, TCNJ has become an exemplar of the best in public higher education and is consistently acknowledged as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the nation. TCNJ currently is ranked as one of the 75 “Most Competitive” schools in the nation by Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges and is rated the No. 1 public institution in the northern region of the country by U.S. News & World Report. TCNJ was named the #10 value in public higher education by the Princeton Review in 2009 and, in 2006, was awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter—an honor shared by less than 10 percent of colleges and universities nationally.

Academic Programs

A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation for a wealth of degree programs offered through TCNJ’s seven schools—Arts & Communication; Business; Humanities & Social Sciences; Education; Science; Nursing, Health, & Exercise Science; and Engineering. The College is enriched by an honors program and extensive opportunities to study abroad, and its award-winning First-Year Experience and freshman orientation programs have helped make its retention and graduation rates among the highest in the country.

Campus

Known for its natural beauty, the College’s campus is set on 289 tree-lined acres in suburban Ewing Township (map). The College has 39 major buildings, including a state-of-the-art library; 14 residence halls that accommodate 3,600 students; an award-winning student center; more than 20 academic computer laboratories; a full range of laboratories for nursing, microscopy, science, and technology; a music building with a 300-seat concert hall; and a collegiate recreation and athletic facilities complex. TCNJ has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of approximately 6,400 students (95 percent from New Jersey).

Student Life

The College of New Jersey encourages students to expand their talents and skills through more than 150 organizations that are open to students. These groups range from performing ensembles and professional and honor societies to student publications, Greek organizations, as well as intramural and club sports. The College also offers numerous leadership opportunities through the Student Finance Board, Student Government Association, and Residence Hall Government to name a few.

Athletics

High achievement and scholarship in the classroom have been mirrored by the success of The College of New Jersey’s varsity student-athletes. Since the 1978–79 Lion wrestling team captured the College’s first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) team championship, TCNJ has established itself as one of the nation’s most successful Division III (non-athletic scholarship) programs. Since 1979, The College of New Jersey has amassed a total of 39 Division III crowns in seven different sports. In addition, the Lions have posted 32 runner-up awards, giving the College an aggregate of 71 first- and second-place finishes. That figure is tops among the nation’s 400-plus Division III colleges and universities during the past 30 years. The Lions have also produced 58 Division III CoSIDA First Team Academic All-Americans.

As impressive as the overall athletic record is, TCNJ’s accomplishment as a leader in women’s sports is even greater. Since NCAA Championships were initiated for women in 1981, only TCNJ has won 32 Division III team championships. The total does not include the Lions’ lacrosse championship in 1981 or the softball championships in 1980 and 1981, which were sponsored by the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) prior to women’s sports inclusion in the NCAA. In the fall of 1999, TCNJ’s women’s athletic program was voted as the top Division III institution for female student-athletes by Sports Illustrated for Women.
