Job Summary

Reporting to and taking direction from the Assistant Director of Information Security, the Information Security Administrator will participate and provide assistance in all operational aspects of the information security program from evaluation, collaboration, standardization, to enforcement and education; working with the security team to contribute to building an effective and comprehensive information security program that reduces risks to protect campus information assets and ensure legal compliance to support of the University’s mission.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in all operational aspects of the information security program, including vulnerability management, incident response, and risk management.
  • Document, assess, and maintain information security standards as required by campus information security program; as part of a team, contribute to the creation, implementation, and education of campus information security standards and programs.
  • Work with the security team, participate in updating and maintaining information security systems.
  • Participate with the team to integrate information security systems with the rest of the IT infrastructure.
  • Assist in analysis of known and emerging threats to determine risks against campus assets.
  • Work closely with senior staff to engage campus partners and stakeholders to promote security and compliance awareness.
  • Participate in security and compliance related reviews, audits and projects.

Other Functions

  • Develop and maintain working knowledge within the field of information security.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Associate’s degree with two (2) years of IT experience. A Bachelor’s degree in IT or an engineering-related field may be substituted in lieu of experience.
  • General knowledge of multiple IT domains and how they interact.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on collaborative, cross-functional teams.
  • Solid interpersonal skills with ability to work with people effectively with people of all levels of information technology expertise with a wide range of constituencies and organizational relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with a willingness to work in a diverse and service-based organization.
  • Solid analytical skills, problem-solving skills and ability to think critically.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree in the IT or engineering-related field.
  • Understanding of modern technical architectures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of modern information risks.
  • Strong interest in all aspects of risk, security, and compliance management.
  • Following where the facts lead and understanding how to minimize bias in the investigative and incident response processes.
  • Understanding of the nuances of risk.
  • Alignment with the higher education mission and desire for diversity.
  • Valid US driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment.

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (37.5 hours per week).
  • Required to work some nights and weekends.
  • Participates in team on-call rotation.
  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position has the opportunity for a remote work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where the employee’s work location is to work from a site other than the UMass Amherst campus. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
