Job Description:

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, the School of Global and Cultural Studies at Marian University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (Creative Writing) to join the Department of Media, Design and Communication. The ideal candidate will be able to teach first-year writing in the general education program, teach introductory and advanced creative writing courses, advise English majors, and guide student publications that support department-wide themes such as social justice activism, global and cultural competency, and community writing. Additionally, we are looking for a candidate eager to develop our undergraduate creative writing curriculum and contribute to various media production and development initiatives in the department (print, digital, social, visual, oral, etc.).

Area of specialization is open (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting, graphic novels, etc.), though the ability to teach multiple genres, traditions (particularly global approaches), and/or medias is desired. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous experience supporting and/or editing literary journals, have experience working in multi/interdisciplinary departments, and have demonstrated active engagement with diverse media production.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values, honoring the legacy of the founding congregation, promoting unity in diversity, and integrating the Catholic Franciscan intellectual traditions in courses, programs, and services.
  • Teaching Load: 18 – 24 credits per academic year.
  • Organize an annual visiting writers’ series.
  • Maintain an active research and publishing agenda.
  • Advise English majors and Creative Writing minors.
  • Mentor student research, internships, and publications.
  • Participate in department, school, and university-wide activities, projects, and recruitment programs.
  • Participate in the life of the campus and university service, including participation in faculty governance and co-curricular programs.
  • Contribute to a campus culture committed to professionalism, collegiality, and confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Creative Writing.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at a university level, especially first-year and creative writing courses.
  • Evidence of ability to work with diverse students in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, culturally sustaining, and inclusive academic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and able to collaborate with colleagues throughout the university and in the community.
  • Potential for ongoing research, publication, and activity in professional associations.
  • Prior editorial experience with a literary or academic journal, including student-led publications, is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University.
