General Summary

The School of Kinesiology and Recreation invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in Exercise Science, to begin August 16, 2023. RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) TEACHING: Provide quality instruction, teaching three courses each semester in exercise science undergraduate and graduate courses in biomechanics, anatomy and physiology, neuromuscular physiology and other courses as needed. Work with undergraduate and graduate students in independent studies, research projects, and master’s theses.
2) SCHOLARSHIP: Develop a focused area of scholarship that culminates in nationally refereed publications and professional presentations, engage in scholarly projects with faculty and students, and submit competitive grant proposals.
3) SERVICE: Participate in faculty meetings and program activities. Serve on School, College, and/or University Committees and contribute to professional organizations.

APPOINTMENT: Tenure track, nine-month position with the possibility of summer teaching. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience with a comprehensive benefits package.
The preferred starting date is August 16, 2023.

Additional Information

BIOMECHANICS RESEARCH LABORATORY: The ISU biomechanics laboratory is strategically located on the ground level of the School of Kinesiology and Recreation in McCormick Hall and is connected via skywalk to the Illinois State University Student Fitness Center. The dedicated motion analysis lab space constitutes 1650 square feet (2/3 of this space has 30 ft ceiling) with additional 1000 square footage dedicated to a laboratory/graduate student office, a teaching/seminar smart classroom, an EMG and Video analysis suite, a clinical evaluation/isokinetic testing room and a large storage room. The lab hosts 3 AMTI force plates, 6-work stations networked to a newly purchased 13-camera Vicon Vero and updated Nexus software, an 8-lead liberty/polhemus electromagnetic tracking system with short and long range sensors with dedicated data collection laptop (equipped with Motion Monitor post processing software), an 8-channel hardwired Delsys/Bagnoli EMG system + trigger module with surface (8 single and 4 double differential) and indwelling electrodes, a portable 8-channel Delsys EMG system, a Biodex 9000 system, a treadmill and numerous transducers and accelerometers. Current research includes sport performance, injury identification, rehabilitation engineering, youth and professional baseball pitching, golf swing, gait/running analyses, pre- and post-surgical therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of upper and lower limb injuries, functional and prophylactic assessment of hip, knee and ankle braces, gait assessment of neurologically impaired (MS, Parkinson’s, TBI, stroke) and the modeling of human motion using Opensim, Matlab and Python suites. The laboratory has strong collaborative ties to the Illinois Neurological Institute (https://www.osfhealthcare.org/services/neurosciences/) and with numerous orthopedic and physical therapy clinics throughout the region.

Required Qualifications

1. Doctoral degree in Exercise Science or a commensurate field. Applicants with expected completion of their doctoral degree before March 1, 2024, will be considered.

2. Expertise in issues related to biomechanics, human anatomy and physiology, neuromuscular function, and/or strength and conditioning.

3. Candidates must be able to demonstrate oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position, as mandated by state law.
