Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in History of Modern Africa (Colonial and Post-Colonial)

The Department of History and the Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) at Rice University invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in the field of Modern African History from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The successful candidate's research areas will focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. We particularly welcome applications from scholars whose research engages indigenous languages/cultures or crosses imperial and/or national borders.
In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful candidate will teach four courses in a normal academic year, including an annual offering of either the core course for the CAAAS undergraduate minor or the core course for the Center’s graduate certificate program. Scholars specializing in gender/sexuality, imperialism and anticolonialism, post-colonial states, the environment, medicine, politics, or science and technology will be strong candidates for this position. Affiliation with one or more of Rice’s several interdepartmental programs is encouraged, though not required. Such programs include the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality; the program on Poverty, Social Justice and Human Capabilities; Environmental Studies; Medical Humanities; Politics, Law and Social Thought; the Baker Institute for Public Policy; and/or Science and Technology Studies. The successful candidate will be based and evaluated for promotion and tenure in the Department of History.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree conferred by July 1, 2023, in African History or African Studies with a strong emphasis in History. The start date of the position is July 1, 2023.
