Arab American Educational Foundation Professorship

The History Department at Rice University invites applications for the Arab American Educational Foundation (AAEF) Professorship at the rank of advanced Assistant or Associate Professor, to begin in July 2023.

The Department seeks a historian of the modern Arab World who has an outstanding record of research, competence in the Arabic language, demonstrated expertise in Arab culture and history, and proven excellence in teaching. The position will carry a teaching load of four courses in a normal academic year. The successful candidate will also have opportunities for community outreach, intercollegiate collaboration, and public engagement in Houston supported by the Arab American Educational Foundation, which also sponsors endowed chairs in Arab Studies and the Center for Arab Studies at the nearby University of Houston.

Candidates must have a PhD in History or related field. They may work in a variety of geographic regions within the modern Arab world, broadly defined, from North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, the former territories of the Ottoman Empire, and the eastern Mediterranean countries of the Levant, including Palestine.

Scholars specializing in gender/sexuality, imperialism and anticolonialism, post-colonial states, migration, south-south relations, the environment, medicine, politics, or science and technology will be strong candidates for this position. The AAEF professor is expected to pursue a robust research agenda, teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the History Department, and advise graduate students.

The person who fills the position may also pursue activities with one or more interdepartmental programs at Rice, such as the Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance; the Jewish Studies Program; the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality; the Center for African and African American Studies; the program on Poverty, Social Justice and Human Capabilities; Environmental Studies; Medical Humanities; Politics, Law and Social Thought; and/or Science and Technology Studies.
