Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Coordinator of Scientific Communications and Community Engagement , FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, Jupiter, FL.

The Coordinator of Scientific Communications and Community Engagement position is intended to provide training in community education, outreach, and communication to add skills outside of, but complementary to, the scope of a traditional science research fellowship. Working under the direction of the Director of Community Engagement and Programming of the Florida Atlantic University Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute (https://www.fau.edu/ibrain), the selected applicant will receive a postdoctoral level appointment in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and will provide direct support to the Institute’s communications activities and community education programs, including ASCEND and MobileMinds programs (https://www.fau.edu/ibrain/ascend/); develop relationships with educators and administrators in area schools and community centers; assist in managing ASCEND fellows, program volunteers, and program participants; and develop activities, lessons, and curriculum that enhance community awareness and education of neuroscience topics, with program audiences ranging from middle school students to adult and senior learner communities. Applicant will also work closely with the Director of the MobileMinds Program to help deliver educational programming to Title I schools and disadvantaged communities.

Essential Duties

  • Assist the Director of ASCEND and Director of MobileMinds programs in administration of community engagement programs.
  • Utilize training and expertise in neuroscience to develop hands-on activities and lessons appropriate for middle school students.
  • Communicate neuroscience concepts effectively on a level that is digestible for a lay audience.
  • Oversee social and digital media activities that communicate the promise and progress of brain research at the Institute.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. from an accredited institution in the Life Sciences (neuroscience familiarity desired but not required) required.

Experience participating in education and community programs as part of a University or research organization.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate and communicate science to diverse audiences.

Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with and serve as a liaison between FAU personnel, community leaders, and the general public.

Excellent networking skills with the ability to create and maintain partnerships that benefit the institute and further its mission.

Proficiency in Microsoft office applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.

Experience creating and posting to social media, including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.


Desired Skills & Experience:

Multiple years of experience in outreach and program development.

Experience teaching K-12 and higher education audiences.

Experience using photo/video editing software such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Acrobat.

Experience creating and updating social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube.

Ability to build, manage, and lead an effective work team comprised of employees, students, and volunteers.

Salary:

$53,000 - $54,840 per year
