This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The Stanford Cardiothoracic Surgery department is seeking to hire a Life Science Technician 1 (LST1). The LST will work with mammalian tissue cultures under Standard University approved protocols and will create laboratory buffers and reagents. The position also requires accurate record keeping of experiments and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Characteristic Duties:
  • Extracting DNA/RNA from cell cultures
  • Mammalian tissue culture work (making media, splitting cells, harvesting cells)
  • Operating imaging automation technologies
  • Troubleshooting and testing of developmental workflows
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments.
  • Help orient and train new staff or students
  • Other duties may also be assigned, such as ordering reagents


  • Qualifications:
  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience or equivalent training (e.g., one year of college science)
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills
  • Ability to following detailed instructions and maintain accurate records
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse group of staff
  • Must have good communication skills


  • Desired:
  • Experience in biology or medical research desired.


  • Special skills, knowledge, or training required, including tools or equipment used.
    • Familiarity with the extraction protocols of DNA and RNA from the blood and tissue samples
    • Able to maintain and handles sample without contaminating or mixing them.
    • Able to standardize a streamlined protocol to generate libraries preparation at high efficiencies from DNA, and RNA
    • Able to adequately QC libraries using qubit, bioanalyzer, fragment analyzer, and QPCR and decide if libraries moved forward to the sequencing step or not.


    Unusual working conditions:
    • Ability to work long hours in the bench as described by this posting position is required.
